Spoilers for the full main story of Death Note: Light Yagami’s story moves from discovering a notebook that can kill to becoming the Kira investigators pursue—and ultimately expose. The timeline below follows the main story in sequence, with a distinction between anime episode and broadcast information and dates assigned to the manga continuity.
Light discovers the Death Note and becomes Kira
Light Yagami is a high-achieving student who finds a notebook dropped into the human world by the Shinigami Ryuk. Its central power is simple: a person whose name is written in it dies. Light decides to use it to kill criminals and create what he considers a better world. His actions make him the person the public comes to call Kira. VIZ’s series description frames the central question as whether Light will use the notebook’s power for good or evil.
L begins investigating the Kira killings
The growing pattern of deaths draws the attention of authorities around the world. The elusive detective L takes up the case, setting Light’s efforts to conceal his identity against L’s deductions. Light’s role inside the investigation later gives him access to information and influence, even as suspicion turns toward him.
Misa and the second Kira widen the case
A second notebook user appears, and the investigation takes on a new dimension. Misa Amane, who is also connected to a Death Note, aligns herself with Light. L’s circle of suspicion narrows around the pair as the investigators try to understand the relationship between the killings and the notebook users.

Light’s memory-loss plan shifts suspicion
Light engineers a plan in which he and Misa relinquish ownership of their Death Notes and lose their memories of using them. The notebook’s active use passes to Yotsuba executive Kyosuke Higuchi. Without his former memories, Light appears to help L and the task force investigate Kira, changing how the case looks to those around him.
The Yotsuba case leads Light back to the Kira role
L and the task force trace the killings to Yotsuba. Higuchi is identified and apprehended, and the chain of events surrounding the notebook returns Light to possession of it and restores his memories. He resumes control of the Kira plan while remaining part of the investigation.

L dies, and Light takes his public role
Rem kills L to protect Misa. After L’s death, Light takes up L’s public investigative role while continuing to act as Kira. This is the major turning point between the first investigation and the later pursuit by L’s successors. The official anime story pages document the episode sequence through this transition: Nippon TV’s Death Note story archive.
Near and Mello take up the pursuit
After a substantial story gap, two candidates raised as potential successors to L pursue Kira by different methods. Near builds the SPK’s case, while Mello operates independently. Mello’s moves force Light and the Japanese task force to react, complicating Light’s attempt to maintain control.

The final confrontation exposes Light
Near arranges a meeting with the Japanese task force. The notebook and Mikami’s actions become central to Near’s effort to prove that Light is Kira. Light is exposed during the confrontation and fails to escape. Ryuk writes Light’s name in the Death Note, ending the main story.

Which dates belong to the story, and which belong to the anime?
There is no single set of dates that should be applied indiscriminately to every version. Nippon TV’s official anime pages give the television adaptation’s episode sequence and its historical broadcast span, October 2006 to June 2007. Episode 1, “新生” (“Rebirth”), aired October 3, 2006. Those are release dates, not dates for events in Light’s life.
A dated event chronology surfaced for manga continuity, not the anime or films. It is secondary and manga-specific; any exact in-story dates should be labeled as manga chronology rather than treated as anime dates. The available official anime episode references establish story order, not a complete event-by-event comparison of manga and anime dates.

How the anime and manga references fit together
The main events above can be followed through the anime’s official episode sequence, while the manga-scoped chronology is relevant only when discussing dates assigned to manga events. The sources establish the anime’s 37-episode count and broadcast period, but do not establish a blanket year offset or a complete list of adaptation differences. VIZ credits Tsugumi Ohba as writer and Takeshi Obata as artist on its official series page.
