Tyson Tomko left WWE in 2006 to wrestle in Japan, hoping to sharpen his skills rather than wait for a bigger opportunity. His Japan run, partnership with Christian Cage, and later reflections on wrestling’s physical toll help explain the career choices behind the imposing presence fans remember.
1. He chose to leave WWE for Japan
In a WWE interview published April 4, 2006, Tomko said he had requested his release so he could work in Japan and hone his wrestling skills. He described the decision as a positive one, not a bitter exit. Read Tomko’s 2006 WWE interview.
2. He wanted to learn a different style
Tomko said he admired Japan’s wrestling style and named Bruiser Brody as an influence on his interest in working there. The move was not simply a change of scenery: he saw it as a chance to study another wrestling environment and improve.
3. He chose to make his own opportunity
Rather than wait for his position in WWE to change, Tomko said he wanted to take action himself. “So, rather than sit around, I’m taking matters into my own hands,” he said in the 2006 interview.

4. Christian Cage saw him as a student of wrestling
Christian Cage later described Tomko as someone who watched matches closely and studied the craft. Cage credited the Japan experience with helping Tomko return as a different performer. 411MANIA reported Cage’s assessment.
5. He teamed with Giant Bernard in Japan
Tomko’s Japan chapter included a tag-team partnership with Giant Bernard. Contemporary wrestling coverage identified the pair as IWGP tag team champions. 6. The Japan move was, in his recollection, meant to lead back to WWE
In a later interview, Tomko recalled that he expected to return to WWE after his Japan run. That is his retrospective account of the plan, not independent confirmation that WWE had committed to bringing him back. POST Wrestling’s 2024 coverage recounts his recollection.

Tomko and Cage’s partnership spanned WWE and TNA. Looking back, Tomko gave Cage personal credit for how far he had progressed: “I love Christian (Cage). Without Christian, I don’t even know if I make it as far as I do, both in WWE and TNA.” POST Wrestling reported the interview.

8. He described wrestling as taking a serious physical toll
In that same interview account, Tomko described significant hip problems and a history of knee and shoulder operations, including replacements. These are details from his own recollection of his medical history, rather than an independently verified medical record.
9. The career story is about more than a WWE departure
Tomko’s account connects a deliberate move to Japan with a desire to develop, a lasting partnership with Cage, and the physical cost he says accumulated over his wrestling career. His 2006 explanation captures the choice as he made it; his later comments add what he remembered about the intended return and what the years in the ring took out of him.
