The New Age Outlaws were Road Dogg Jesse James and Billy Gunn: a tag team built on Road Dogg’s crowd-ready patter and Gunn’s athleticism. Their run became closely linked with D-Generation X, but the duo had a distinct identity—and later returned to win WWE tag team gold again.
1. The team paired Road Dogg and Billy Gunn
Road Dogg Jesse James and Billy Gunn formed the New Age Outlaws after earlier characters had not given them the same strong shared identity. Road Dogg had been The Roadie and “The Real Double J”; Gunn had competed as Rockabilly after his Smoking Gunns run. WWE’s biographies describe the Outlaws as a pairing whose contrasting styles clicked.
2. Their contrast was the chemistry
Road Dogg supplied comic swagger and audience interaction, while Gunn brought athleticism and a more physical presence. WWE characterizes the pairing as a natural fit: “Road Dogg’s swaggering jocularity perfectly complementing Gunn’s born-this-way athleticism.” The different strengths gave the act a recognizable rhythm rather than making it feel like two interchangeable partners.
3. Road Dogg’s introduction turned into a crowd hook
The spoken entrance was part of the performance. Road Dogg’s signature line—“Oh you didn’t know? You better call somebody!”—helped invite the audience into the act; WWE notes that crowds sang along to his words. It was not just an introduction before the match, but a recurring way to establish the team’s brash, playful tone.

4. Their storylines leaned into comic chaos
The Outlaws were involved in memorable on-screen antics as well as matches. WWE recounts a storyline in which they took the Road Warriors’ spiked shoulder pads and locked Cactus Jack and Chainsaw Charlie in a dumpster before it was thrown off the entrance stage. These were staged wrestling-storyline events, not accounts of an unscripted real-world attack.
5. D-Generation X amplified their act
The New Age Outlaws became part of D-Generation X, tying their history to one of WWE’s most prominent factions. Road Dogg served as the group’s de facto hypeman, a natural extension of the microphone work that already distinguished the tag team. Their importance is not limited to DX, though: the Outlaws had their own identity as a team.

6. WWE credits them with five World Tag Team title reigns
WWE’s Road Dogg and Billy Gunn biographies each credit the pair with five reigns as World Tag Team Champions. That figure refers to the World Tag Team Championship named in those biographies. The duo later won a differently named WWE Tag Team Championship in 2014, so the two milestones are best kept distinct rather than combined into an undefined career total.
7. Their opponents included established teams and unusual pairings
WWE’s biographies name the Legion of Doom and The Rock ’n’ Sock Connection among the Outlaws’ notable opponents. Those examples show the range of matchups associated with their run; they are not a definitive ranking or a complete list of the team’s signature matches.

8. They reunited in 2014 and won the WWE Tag Team Titles
The Outlaws returned together in 2014 and defeated Cody Rhodes and Goldust for the WWE Tag Team Titles in the Royal Rumble Kickoff Match, according to their WWE biographies. WWE also recounts a later steel-cage title defense against Rhodes and Goldust. This comeback gave the pair a prominent later chapter beyond their original run.
9. Their Hall of Fame recognition came as members of DX
D-Generation X was inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame in 2019, with Road Dogg and Billy Gunn represented among the faction’s members. WWE’s Hall of Fame event page documents the DX induction; it does not establish a separate induction of the New Age Outlaws as a tag team.

What is known about a more recent reunion?
A News4JAX item dated July 9, 2026, was titled “Going Ringside Ep. 200: New Age Outlaws reunite.” Its title supports saying that the outlet reported a reunion, but it does not establish whether the appearance was a match, where it took place, or whether the pair have resumed teaming regularly. It should not be read as evidence of an ongoing comeback.
