Paramount Network did not renew the scripted series in 2018, and contemporaneous reporting attributed the decision to ratings that were not high enough to justify a second season. Kyle Richards later said she hoped the show might find another home, but it did not continue elsewhere, according to Bravo’s 2024 retrospective.
Why was American Woman canceled?
TheWrap reported on September 5, 2018, that Paramount Network had canceled the series because it had not maintained ratings high enough to earn another season. Richards confirmed the ending publicly the next day, according to Bravo’s September 6, 2018 report. The coverage does not give a ratings figure or a specific renewal threshold, so the explanation is best stated as the network’s reported ratings rationale rather than a more precise claim. Richards said she hoped the series might find a new home. That was a hope, not an announcement of a deal: Bravo’s 2024 retrospective says the show did not continue on another network. The sources cited here do not establish its current streaming or purchase availability.
What was the show about?
American Woman was a scripted comedy-drama set in the 1970s, not a reality show or a literal account of Richards’ family. Alicia Silverstone starred as Bonnie Nolan, a fictionalized divorced mother figuring out life during that decade. Mena Suvari and Jennifer Bartels were also among the cast, according to TheWrap’s cancellation coverage.

Richards executive produced the series. Bravo reports that she began developing it in 2015 and described it as inspired by her childhood and her late mother, Kathleen Richards. Richards called it a “love letter,” while emphasizing that it was not a literal story about her mother and sisters. In a 2017 interview quoted by Bravo, she described it as “a scripted show inspired by [our childhood].”
Did family tensions cause the cancellation?
Richards’ sisters had concerns about the project: Bravo’s retrospective reports that Kathy Hilton objected to what she felt was a negative portrayal of their mother. That disagreement is part of the show’s background, but the contemporaneous cancellation report attributes the non-renewal to ratings. The available reporting does not establish that family tensions caused Paramount’s decision.

Why was the series on Paramount Network?
American Woman had been in TV Land’s development pipeline before moving to Paramount Network as that channel prepared its 2018 launch. In a 2017 interview, Paramount executive Kevin Kay discussed moving the show, along with Heathers, into the new network’s lineup as part of a broader programming and marketing strategy. That history explains the network context; it does not provide a cause for the later cancellation. TheWrap’s 2017 interview with Kay
