Napster’s growth ran into lawsuits over copyrighted recordings and the harder task of turning free sharing into a licensed business. Fanning then founded the music-rights startup Snocap, moved into gaming with Rupture, and later worked with Sean Parker on the video startup Airtime. The documented career arc here runs through 2013; his current role is not established by the cited accounts.
How Shawn Fanning created Napster
Fanning was a student at Northeastern University when he built Napster. Rather than storing every song on a central service, Napster helped users find music files on other users’ computers and transfer them directly. That made it easier to discover music beyond a listener’s existing collection. The service spread quickly on college campuses in fall 1999, where high-speed internet connections helped users exchange files. PBS’s retrospective explains the system and its campus appeal.
Fanning recalled the timing in a 2013 interview: “I got my first computer when I was sixteen. I wrote Napster when I was eighteen.” That is his recollection, published by Esquire, rather than an independently audited timeline.
Napster did not invent peer-to-peer networking. Its significance was bringing this kind of file sharing to a broad public audience. Fortune’s 2013 oral history reported that Napster reached a peak of 70 million users, while cautioning that recollections from participants could conflict. Treat that figure as Fortune’s reported peak, not as an independently verified count. Fortune’s oral history also details the pressures surrounding the company.

Why Napster fell
The same convenience that fueled Napster’s growth put it at the center of a copyright dispute. Users could find and share commercial recordings without the permission or licensing arrangements rights holders required. The music industry challenged the service in court, and Napster’s rapid adoption did not solve the underlying question of how to compensate artists and rights holders for the music being exchanged.
It is too simple to describe Napster only as a piracy tool or only as a neutral technical breakthrough. It made music discovery and sharing easier, but much of the catalog circulated without authorization. The clash between user demand, copyright obligations and a workable business model is central to the service’s rise and decline. Fortune’s oral history records differing participant accounts, so claims about individual intentions should be attributed rather than treated as settled fact.

What Fanning did after Napster
Snocap: trying to make peer-to-peer music legal
After leaving Napster, Fanning founded Snocap to connect peer-to-peer distribution with authorized music sales. The company aimed to identify recordings and their rights holders, then support a marketplace for licensed tracks. The approach tried to preserve the reach of file-sharing networks while adding the rights information and permissions needed for a legitimate business.
In a 2004 Los Angeles Times report, Fanning said he wanted to build something lasting and reflect ideals he associated with Napster. “I do have something to prove at some level,” he said. The same report quoted Audible Magic CEO Vance Ikezoye describing the challenge: “technology is not the problem; it’s the business model — how do you convert somebody who’s getting something for free?” The Los Angeles Times later reported that Snocap was sold to imeem in April 2008.

Rupture: a social network for gamers
Fanning’s next documented venture shifted from music to gaming. Rupture was designed to help players see what their friends were playing and connect around games. Electronic Arts acquired the service, and Fanning stayed to work toward its launch, according to the Los Angeles Times’ 2009 account.
Airtime: live video and social discovery
In 2011, Fanning and Sean Parker were working on Airtime, a real-time video service intended to introduce people to one another. TechCrunch’s report describes the concept at that time; it is a historical account of an announced venture, not evidence of the service’s present status.
