The True Story Behind the Classic Cars of American Graffiti

From Milner’s yellow Deuce Coupe to Falfa’s three production Chevrolets, the cars of American Graffiti reveal the film’s cruising culture and complicated vehicle histories.

The cars in American Graffiti are more than period scenery: they define the film’s rivalries, social identities and cruising culture. John Milner’s yellow 1932 Ford Deuce Coupe faces Bob Falfa’s black 1955 Chevrolet, while Steve Bolander’s 1958 Impala and a white 1956 Ford Thunderbird give the night a different kind of glamour. The key distinction is between a character’s car and the particular vehicles used to film it—especially because production reportedly used three separate ’55 Chevrolets.

Why the cars matter in American Graffiti

Set in 1962 and released in 1973, George Lucas’s film follows teenagers cruising through a summer evening and weighing what comes next. Lucasfilm connects the story to Lucas’s own adolescence in Modesto, California. The cars make that world visible: a hot rod signals Milner’s independence, Falfa’s Chevy gives him a rival’s imposing entrance, and Steve’s Impala suggests a more polished cruising identity. The film’s cars work as characters as much as transportation.

Lucasfilm writer and historian Lucas O. Seastrom describes the inspiration as “American Graffiti’s story about a group of teenage friends cruising the streets of their small town on a summer evening was inspired by director George Lucas’ adolescence in Modesto, California.” The film’s music was part of the same design: Lucasfilm says Lucas drew on his collection of 45 rpm records when writing the script and assigned particular songs to scenes. The company says music licensing cost nearly one-seventh of the film’s total budget; that is Lucasfilm’s reported figure, not an independently audited accounting statement.

The cars and their roles

Character or association Car Role in the film What is established about the vehicle
John Milner Yellow 1932 Ford Deuce Coupe Hot rod and rival racer Lucasfilm identifies the year and character connection. Cruisin’ the Boulevard reports build and ownership details.
Bob Falfa Black 1955 Chevrolet Milner’s rival in the climactic race Lucasfilm identifies the character’s car. Cruisin’ the Boulevard reports that three Chevrolets served different production needs.
Steve Bolander 1958 Chevrolet Impala Cruising car and marker of social position ClassicCars.com reports that former NASCAR crew chief Ray Evernham located and restored the original movie Impala.
Clay and May Daily White 1956 Ford Thunderbird Distinctive cruising image, also associated with the blonde woman played by Suzanne Somers Cruisin’ the Boulevard gives the owner-history account; a ClassicCars.com image caption instead says 1955.

Milner’s 1932 Ford Deuce Coupe

The yellow coupe is the film’s defining hot rod and the car at the center of its Ford-versus-Chevrolet race. Lucasfilm identifies it as Milner’s 1932 Deuce Coupe. Cruisin’ the Boulevard says Lucas and producer Gary Kurtz selected a red, full-fendered coupe for its chopped top and that the car was built to evoke Lucas’s memories of cruising around 1962. That account’s red description conflicts with Lucasfilm’s identification of the finished screen car as yellow. The sources do not explain the discrepancy, so red is best understood as a reported selection-stage description, not the car’s final on-screen color.

Cruisin’ the Boulevard also describes modifications and reports that the movie car later passed through owners Steve Fitch and Rick Figari. Those are the organization’s reported build and ownership details; they should not be treated as independently confirmed current ownership.

Falfa’s 1955 Chevrolet: one character, three production cars

Lucasfilm identifies Falfa’s black 1955 Chevrolet as the Deuce Coupe’s opponent in the climactic race. Cruisin’ the Boulevard’s production account says three black 1955 Chevrolets were used: an exterior-shot car driven by Harrison Ford, a separate stunt car for race action, and a non-running Bel Air prepared for the crash and explosion. The organization says the stunt car was crushed. It traces the other car through Henry Travers, Sam Crawford and Steve Fitch to Wayne Newsome in Maryland. This is a reported chain of ownership, not a confirmation of present registration.

The practical problems were memorable. Cruisin’ the Boulevard reproduces transportation manager Henry Travers’s recollection: “We had so much trouble getting that damn Chevy started each time”. The page says the car’s battery was in the trunk, so Travers ran heavy-duty battery cable directly to the starter. It also says the crash car would not roll over as planned and the crew had to roll it onto its side. Lucasfilm separately says the first stunt attempt failed to flip the Chevrolet and that a second attempt weeks later succeeded. These accounts describe related production difficulties but do not establish a single, precise timeline for every crash shot.

Steve’s 1958 Chevrolet Impala

Steve’s Impala contrasts with Milner’s stripped-down hot rod: it belongs to the film’s cruising and social-status side rather than its central race rivalry. ClassicCars.com describes it as a mildly customized 1958 coupe and reports that former NASCAR crew chief Ray Evernham located and restored the original movie car. That is automotive-journalism reporting, rather than an official Lucasfilm provenance record.

Be cautious about treating the engine depicted on screen as a verified specification. ClassicCars.com notes that a 327-cubic-inch V8 shown in connection with the car conflicts with the timing of that engine’s introduction and says it is unlikely the Impala had that setup.

The white 1956 Ford Thunderbird

Cruisin’ the Boulevard identifies this as Clay and May Daily’s 1956 Thunderbird. Its account says the couple bought the car in 1964, repainted it white after moving to Petaluma, and were invited to have it appear in the film after a note was left on the parked car in 1972. The same page says they later entrusted it to a Petaluma friend when they were ready to part with it.

The year deserves care: ClassicCars.com associates a Thunderbird with the blonde woman played by Suzanne Somers but captions one image as a 1955 model, while its body text and Cruisin’ the Boulevard’s owner-history page identify a 1956. The 1956 identification has the support of the owner-history account; the caption discrepancy does not establish that the film used a separate 1955 car.

Other cars in the cruising ensemble

Cruisin’ the Boulevard also gives histories for a 1951 Mercury, a 1961 Ford Galaxie made into a police-car clone, and a 1967 Citroën 2CV. ClassicCars.com discusses the chopped Mercury associated with the Pharoahs. These examples help show how varied the film’s street scene was, but the available accounts do not provide complete, independently corroborated current provenance for each car. Claims about ownership, condition or survival should therefore remain attributed rather than presented as settled facts.

Where the famous race was filmed

The story draws on Lucas’s Modesto adolescence, but Petaluma was a principal filming location. Lucasfilm identifies Frates Road in Petaluma as the real road used for the film’s fictional Paradise Road. Its account places the climactic race near the end of shooting in July 1972, after repeated nights of work. The distinction matters: Modesto informs the story’s roots, while Frates Road is the real location behind the final race.

What the car histories can—and cannot—prove

Screen identity and vehicle provenance are not interchangeable. Lucasfilm is the clearest source here for the principal character-car identifications and the race location. More detailed build and ownership histories come from Cruisin’ the Boulevard, a community organization, while ClassicCars.com supplies automotive-journalism reporting on the Impala and Thunderbird. Those sources are useful, but their reported histories do not amount to a complete, independently verified record of every surviving vehicle.

  • Use the film’s character-car identities confidently where Lucasfilm names them: Milner’s yellow 1932 Deuce Coupe and Falfa’s black 1955 Chevrolet.
  • For ownership chains and build details, name the source making the claim rather than implying a certified or current record.
  • For Falfa’s Chevy, distinguish the exterior car, stunt car and crash car instead of assuming every shot shows one vehicle.
  • For the Thunderbird, identify it as a 1956 based on the owner-history account and acknowledge the conflicting ClassicCars.com caption when the year is relevant.
