The “Ferrari” Cameron’s father keeps in the garage was not a single car during filming. The movie presents it as a 1961 Ferrari 250 GT California Spyder, but Modena Design & Development replicas handled most of the scenes, including the car’s famous plunge through the window. Accounts differ on whether a genuine Ferrari was used for close-ups; the best-supported distinction is that real-car inserts were used for close shots while replicas did the driving and stunt work.
Was the Ferrari in Ferris Bueller’s Day Off real?
Not for most of the action. The car in the story is Cameron’s father’s 1961 Ferrari 250 GT California Spyder, but the production used three replicas built by Modena Design & Development. The Henry Ford and the National Historic Vehicle Register describe the replicas’ distinct roles; Car and Driver reports that an authentic California Spider was separately rented for close-ups. The Revs Institute says no actual Ferrari was used, so accounts conflict on the close-up inserts. The strongest reconciliation is that replicas performed the driving and stunt work, with genuine-car footage used for some close shots.
That distinction matters because “the Ferrari” can mean the car the characters talk about, the genuine Ferrari used in any inserts, or one of the replica cars that appeared on screen. They are not interchangeable.
What did the three replicas do?
The Henry Ford says director John Hughes commissioned three replicas: two functional cars for most scenes and one non-running car intended to fly out of the garage. The National Historic Vehicle Register gives a more specific allocation:

| Production car | Role in filming |
|---|---|
| Completed leased replica | Used for wide shots. |
| Partially completed replica sold to the studio | Used in shots with actors inside. |
| Rolling shell | Launched through the garage window. |
The car that crashes through the window was a shell, not a running Ferrari. The risky scene did not destroy an authentic 250 GT California Spyder.
How the surviving screen car differs from a Ferrari
The surviving car listed by the National Historic Vehicle Register is a 1985 Modena Spyder California, built by Modena Design & Development, a company founded by Neil Glassmoyer and Mark Goyette. It is a replica, not a Ferrari factory-built California Spyder. Its listed specifications make that clear:

Those details describe the replica. They are not specifications for Ferrari’s original car.
What is the real Ferrari 250 GT California Spyder?
The genuine California Spyder is a rare open sports car in Ferrari’s 250 GT family. The Henry Ford describes genuine 250 GT street cars as highly sought-after collector cars that sell at auction for millions. That context helps explain why the production used replicas for scenes involving dangerous driving or a destructive stunt.

The film’s garage dialogue uses “less than 100” as shorthand for the car’s rarity. Treat that as dialogue, not as a verified production total for a particular California Spyder variant. The plot calls Cameron’s car a 1961 model; that does not mean every California Spyder was built in 1961.
What happened to the surviving replica?
After filming, the register-listed car went back to Modena. The studio had used it for a jump scene and damaged it; Modena repaired the car and sold it to its first private owner. By 2003, it had passed to an owner in the United Kingdom.

Petersen Automotive Museum’s vehicle spotlight labels it “No Longer On Display.” Exhibition status can change, so check with a museum directly before planning a visit.

The Henry Ford and the Hagerty Drivers Foundation report that Ferrari sued Modena Design & Development and other replica builders after the film. Their accounts say the matter was settled out of court and that Modena was allowed to continue production after making minor changes. These accounts do not establish the filing date, court, or settlement documents, so those details should not be inferred.
