Yes—the wrecked Lamborghini in The Wolf of Wall Street was a real 1989 Countach 25th Anniversary Edition, used as the film’s stunt “hero car.” But the movie changed one important detail: according to RM Sotheby’s account, Jordan Belfort later said the car he crashed in real life was a Mercedes, not a Lamborghini.
Which Countach was wrecked for the film?
Bonhams identifies the damaged car as a 1989 Lamborghini Countach 25th Anniversary Edition, VIN ZA9CA05A6KLA12692. It was the production’s hero car—the vehicle used for the main stunt action and preserved in its filmed, damaged condition for Bonhams’ 2023 offering. Bonhams’ auction description provides the identification and production account.
There was also a second film-used Countach: the undamaged backup, VIN ZA9CA05A0KLA12722. It appeared in two brief shots, for approximately 16 seconds, according to Bonhams and RM Sotheby’s listing. Bonhams estimates the wrecked hero car appears for approximately 3 minutes and 11 seconds.
| Film car | Identification | Role and screen time |
|---|---|---|
| Wrecked hero car | 1989 Countach 25th Anniversary Edition; VIN ZA9CA05A6KLA12692 | Stunt vehicle; approximately 3 minutes and 11 seconds, according to Bonhams |
| Undamaged backup | 1989 Countach 25th Anniversary Edition; VIN ZA9CA05A0KLA12722 | Backup car; approximately 16 seconds across two brief shots, according to Bonhams and RM Sotheby’s |
How the wrecked car got its damage
According to Bonhams’ account, the hero car was driven in the stunt sequences. The action included swerving with its scissor door open and colliding with other vehicles and objects, including a sign and a mailbox. That first round of stunts did not leave the car looking damaged enough for the scene, so the crew used another car and a flatbed truck to inflict further damage. The Countach was kept in the condition seen in the film.

Did Jordan Belfort really crash a Countach?
Not according to the correction reported by RM Sotheby’s. Its auction listing says Belfort later claimed that the vehicle he crashed in real life “was actually a Mercedes in real life.” The listing does not identify the Mercedes model or independently document the accident, so the safest conclusion is that the film turned the crash into a Countach scene, while Belfort reportedly said the real-life car was a Mercedes.

What happened to the other film-used Countach?
The backup was not the car wrecked for the film. RM Sotheby’s identifies its car, VIN ZA9CA05A0KLA12722, as the undamaged example and reports that it sold at the auction house’s New York sale for $1,655,000. That price belongs to the backup, not to the damaged hero car.
The reviewed auction accounts do not establish the wrecked hero car’s eventual sale outcome or current owner.
