Ferrari did not sue Deadmau5 over his customized 458, according to the available reporting: the company sent him a cease-and-desist letter in 2014, and no lawsuit is reported. The dispute centered on the car’s “Purrari” branding—especially its custom badges and floor mats—rather than simply the Nyan Cat wrap.
What happened to Deadmau5’s “Purrari”?
Deadmau5, the stage name of musician Joel Zimmerman, customized a Ferrari 458 with a Nyan Cat-themed vinyl wrap and Purrari badges. Reports also identified custom floor mats as part of the dispute. The brightly wrapped car drew attention before Ferrari’s letter: a July 2014 Time report described Zimmerman and then-Toronto Mayor Rob Ford riding in it.
On August 27, 2014, Zimmerman publicly said he had received a cease-and-desist letter from Ferrari North America and had unwrapped the car. Jalopnik’s contemporaneous report reproduced his comments, including his explanation that the issue was “mostly about the custom floor matts and the custom purrari badges.” The wrap and badges were removed.
Why did Ferrari object?
The strongest account in contemporaneous reporting is that Ferrari objected to the customized branding, particularly the Purrari badges and floor mats. A 2014 legal commentary from Stites & Harbison characterized Ferrari’s letter as alleging trademark infringement. That is a lawyer’s description of the dispute, not a court finding.

The letter itself and an official Ferrari statement are not established in the available reporting. So the precise language of Ferrari’s demands, and the complete legal basis it asserted, cannot be independently confirmed here. It is more accurate to say the reported flashpoint was the custom Ferrari-related branding than to claim a court determined that Zimmerman infringed a trademark.
Was a sale listing part of the dispute?
Stites & Harbison’s October 2014 commentary said the car had been listed for sale on Craigslist after the Gumball 3000 rally. It raised the possibility that a dealer contract’s right-of-first-refusal provision could have been relevant. The commentary did not establish that this was Ferrari’s stated reason for sending the letter, and the available contemporary account instead linked the reported objection to the badges and floor mats. Treat the sale-contract explanation as speculation, not a confirmed cause.

Did Ferrari actually sue Deadmau5?
No lawsuit is reported. A 2026 retrospective from LegalClarity states that no lawsuit was filed; the 2014 coverage describes a cease-and-desist letter and the removal of the custom elements. No court ruling or legal determination of Ferrari’s claims is established by these accounts.
The shorthand “Ferrari sued Deadmau5” turns a letter into a court case that the available record does not show. The supported story is narrower: Ferrari sent a cease-and-desist letter concerning the customized 458, Zimmerman said the badges and floor mats were the main issue, and he removed the custom wrap and branding.
