Serena Williams said she joined Kendrick Lamar’s Super Bowl LIX halftime show because his team had wanted to work with her for a long time, remembered her 2012 Olympic gold-medal celebration, and offered her a rare chance to dance at the Super Bowl. She later added that representing their shared hometown of Compton mattered to her. Although her brief appearance during “Not Like Us” led some viewers to read it as a jab at Drake, Williams said that was not her intent.
What happened during the Super Bowl halftime show?
On February 9, 2025, Kendrick Lamar performed at halftime of Super Bowl LIX in New Orleans. Serena Williams appeared briefly as he performed “Not Like Us,” the song associated with his public feud with Drake. The Associated Press reported that Williams was seen crip-walking along to the track; TIME described the on-air moment as lasting less than five seconds.
The Associated Press’s account of the performance and TIME’s report on the cameo provide the event context.
Why did Serena Williams agree to appear?
Lamar’s team recalled her Olympic celebration
Williams said Lamar and his team told her they had been trying to do something together for a long time. They specifically remembered her victory dance after she won Olympic gold at the 2012 London Games. In an Instagram explanation quoted by the Los Angeles Times, Williams recalled their message: “we loved your crip walk at the Olympics after you won the gold medal.”

She wanted to represent Compton

She reflected: “Who would have thought that a tennis player from Compton would be regarded as one of the best tennis players of all time?”
Her comments describe several reasons for accepting—the long-sought collaboration, the connection to her Olympic dance, the unusual performance opportunity, and the chance to represent Compton. They do not establish one exclusive motive.

Was her cameo meant as a message to Drake?
Some viewers interpreted Williams’s appearance as a jab at Drake because she danced during “Not Like Us,” a diss track connected to Lamar’s feud with him. Coverage also noted past reporting and speculation about a connection between Williams and Drake. That context explains why the cameo prompted the interpretation, but it does not show that she accepted the invitation for that reason.
Williams directly rejected the idea in her TIME interview. Asked whether her appearance was shade toward Drake, she replied, “Absolutely not,” according to ABC News. She also said she had never had negative feelings toward him. Her statement clarifies her intent; the song and staging nevertheless explain why some viewers read the moment differently.
