Spoilers for the finale of Netflix’s eight-episode 2025 drama. In the finale, Ed Gein imagines helping FBI investigators catch Ted Bundy, then turns away from Adeline when she says she will continue his work and kill. That Bundy connection is fictional: the real Gein did not help capture Bundy. The series draws on documented crimes but invents and leaves uncertain parts of its story.
What happens to Ed Gein in Monster: The Ed Gein Story?
The finale places Gein in an imagined hospital-world sequence in which he helps FBI investigators catch Ted Bundy. Gein is ill with cancer and sees Adeline one last time. When she says she will carry on his work and kill, he asks her not to, then leaves. Netflix Tudum describes the exchange as a change from the pair’s earlier dynamic.
The Bundy investigation is not a real event from Gein’s life. It is part of the show’s imagined narrative, not evidence that Gein assisted investigators. The finale uses that fantasy and his final meeting with Adeline to bring its themes of isolation, mental illness, media influence and public fascination together.
How much of the series is true?
The historical case is real; the show’s scenes and relationships should not all be treated as historical fact. TIME’s overview, which draws on its original 1957 reporting, says Gein was arrested after the killing of Bernice Worden and admitted killing Mary Hogan. Authorities found human remains and objects made from human skin at his farmhouse. He had also robbed graves. After his apprehension, he was diagnosed with schizophrenia and confined to psychiatric hospitals until his death in 1984.

| Story element | What is documented or reported | How to read the series |
|---|---|---|
| Bernice Worden and Mary Hogan | TIME reports that Gein was arrested in 1957 after Worden’s killing and admitted killing Hogan. | These murders are part of the documented case, though a dramatized scene is not itself historical evidence. |
| Farmhouse discoveries and grave robbery | TIME reports that authorities found human remains and objects made from human skin; Gein also robbed graves. | The show draws on these facts. The historical record does not make every depicted detail or scene independently factual. |
| Ted Bundy investigation | No real-world contribution by Gein to capturing Bundy is established in the cited reporting. | The finale’s hospital-world Bundy sequence is imagined. |
| Evelyn Hartley | Tudum says Gein was questioned about her disappearance, which remained unsolved. | Do not treat the series’ depiction of her murder as a solved historical fact. |
| Adeline Watkins | Tudum describes a real Plainfield resident whose account of her relationship with Gein changed; its precise nature remains uncertain. | The series’ portrayal is dramatized, and the relationship cannot be settled from the available account. |
Is Adeline real?
Adeline Watkins was based on a real Plainfield resident, but what her relationship with Gein actually was is unresolved. She initially said they were an item and planned to marry; she reportedly later said she had made that up. Co-creator Ian Brennan told Tudum he considers her real, while Charlie Hunnam interpreted much of her presence in the story as Gein’s fantasy. Those are differing interpretations, not a definitive historical answer.
What is Ed’s diagnosis in Episode 7?
TIME reports that Gein was diagnosed with schizophrenia and spent the remainder of his life in psychiatric hospitals after his arrest. That historical diagnosis does not establish the accuracy of every episode’s depiction of his thoughts, behavior or treatment. A diagnosis also does not, by itself, explain or excuse the crimes.

What does the ending say about monsters?
The creators frame the season’s central question as whether monsters are born or made. Ryan Murphy told Tudum, “The interesting thing about the show is the thesis statement of every season is: Are monsters born or are they made?” He added, “And I think in Ed’s case, it’s probably a little of both.” Ian Brennan described the show’s turn toward the audience this way: “This whole series, it turns the camera right on us.” These are the creators’ interpretations of the drama, not historical conclusions about the causes of Gein’s crimes.

Gein’s crimes influenced later works of horror, but those works are not literal retellings of his life. Tudum connects the case to Robert Bloch’s novel Psycho, which inspired Alfred Hitchcock’s film adaptation. TIME also names The Texas Chain Saw Massacre and The Silence of the Lambs among films drawing on Gein’s story. “Inspired” or “influenced” is the right distinction: the films are works of fiction, not documentary accounts of the case.
