Melissa Gilbert says misophonia shaped her life from childhood: particular sounds could leave her afraid, angry, guilty, and desperate to escape. After learning the condition had a name, she contacted Duke’s Center for Misophonia & Emotion Regulation and completed intensive cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT). She says therapy gave her coping skills and greater control—not a cure.
What is misophonia?
Misophonia is the name Gilbert learned for her intense reactions to certain sounds. In an ABC News interview published August 21, 2024, she described feeling afraid and isolated, then angry and guilty when triggered. She said she spent much of her life on alert, anticipating a sound that might make her want to flee or scream.
Her account is of a reaction far more disruptive than ordinary irritation. It is also her personal experience: the sounds that affect one person, and the intensity of the response, should not be assumed to apply to everyone with misophonia.
Which sounds triggered Gilbert?
Gilbert identified a range of sounds, with their intensity varying. Examples included:

She recalled feeling like an “other” throughout her life. When she discovered that her experience had a name, she said, “I sobbed.”
How did Melissa Gilbert treat misophonia?
Gilbert contacted Duke’s Center for Misophonia & Emotion Regulation, whose director, Dr. Zach Rosenthal, interviewed her for ABC News. The Independent reported on August 22, 2024 that she completed 16 weeks of intensive CBT. Duke University School of Medicine also published an item about her experience on August 21, 2024: “Actor Melissa Gilbert Shares Reflections & Video about her Experience with Misophonia.”

Gilbert said the therapy gave her a “toolbox of coping mechanisms,” many of which she uses nearly every day. She described her life as more peaceful after treatment and said she had more ability to keep misophonia from controlling her. She was also clear that it does not simply go away.

Gilbert’s experience points to a practical first step: describe the sounds that trigger a reaction and what happens emotionally or behaviorally, then discuss the disruption with a qualified health professional. A specialist center such as Duke’s may be a relevant place to learn about care; a clinician can help assess what support fits an individual situation. Gilbert’s account does not establish that CBT works the same way for everyone, or that every person has her triggers.

The treatment goal she described was better coping and more control, rather than a guaranteed cure. She also emphasized the value of knowing others share the experience: “Even more importantly, I want people to know they are not alone.”
