Maya Henry said she experienced complications during a non-surgical abortion and went to hospital alone. In a May 2024 interview with People, she also described feeling lonely during conversations with male clinicians and reflected: “If it were up to me, I wouldn’t have done it.” The account was personal testimony, not medical guidance.
What Maya Henry said about her experience
Henry discussed the experience with People while promoting her novel Looking Forward. The Independent reported that she said her real-life experience was similar to that of Mallory, the book’s protagonist. Henry said she had complications and had to go to hospital alone.
She also described feeling alienated when male clinicians told her the experience would feel like a heavy period. Her remark, “If it were up to me, I wouldn’t have done it,” reflected her retrospective view of the decision and the difficult conversations around it. She said the experience was one reason she wanted to include a related storyline in the novel.
What is known about Liam Payne’s connection
The Independent reported that Henry and Liam Payne had an on-and-off relationship from 2019 to 2022. But Henry did not specify when the abortion occurred, and the interview account does not identify the partner involved. Their relationship history does not establish that Payne was the partner.
#1 Best Overall
Some coverage framed Henry’s account as involving pressure from a former partner. That framing does not establish the partner’s identity; claims that Payne was involved go beyond what the reported interview remarks confirm.
How the experience relates to Looking Forward
Henry was discussing Looking Forward, a novel she described as inspired by true events. Its central character, Mallory, has an abortion experience that Henry said was similar to her own. Henry’s remarks explain the personal connection she drew between the story and the book; they do not make the novel a documentary account.

Henry’s account describes her own experience, including complications, loneliness, and a hospital visit. The interview coverage does not provide a named statistic about abortion outcomes, nor does it establish a basis for generalizing her experience to other patients. Her comments should be understood as personal testimony rather than clinical information.
