The Times reported that the parents retained joint legal custody, with Newman given “tie-breaking authority” on legal-custody matters. That is not the same as sole legal custody.
What the March 2025 order reportedly said
The Los Angeles Times, which said it reviewed legal documents, reported that Newman received sole primary physical custody. The report described King’s time with the children as supervised visitation until the court ruled otherwise. It also listed recovery, parenting and counseling requirements. These are accounts of the reported order, not a direct account based on the order reproduced here.
Physical custody concerns where children live and the arrangements for their care. Legal custody concerns authority over important decisions. The Times reported that legal custody remained joint, while Newman could break a tie on legal-custody issues.
Reported requirements for King
The Times reported a six-month drug and alcohol program with weekly testing, aftercare and a 12-step program; a 26-week parenting program; individual counseling addressing issues in the case; and joint counseling with the children if their therapist deemed it appropriate.

A separate People report carried by Yahoo Entertainment also described supervised visits and program and counseling conditions, but called the recovery program a “2-step program.” The accounts differ on that detail, so it cannot be stated definitively without the underlying order.
King disputed the reported details
In an April 2025 report, the Times said King publicly described the details of the order as “inaccurate.” Her objection is relevant context: the conditions above are descriptions published by news outlets, not uncontested terms confirmed here from the primary court document. The Times’s account of her response is available in its April 11 report.
The Times also quoted Newman’s attorney, Garry M. Gekht, saying Newman was happy to have the children in his home full-time and hoped King would make progress in recovery. That was the attorney’s characterization, not a judicial finding.
Does the March 2025 order reflect the current arrangement?
The order was reported filed March 11, 2025, and the Times published its account on March 18, updated March 19. The available reporting cited here does not establish whether a later court action changed the arrangement. It therefore supports describing what was reported in March 2025, but not asserting that those terms remain in force in October 2026.

Background to the custody report
The Times reported that King filed for divorce in May 2020 and that the former couple reached a divorce settlement in September 2023. Those dates provide context, but do not establish the present custody status.
