What happened at the Station nightclub fire?
On February 20, 2003, Russell was performing with a Great White-affiliated lineup at the Station nightclub in West Warwick, Rhode Island, when pyrotechnics ignited soundproofing foam. The fire killed 100 people and injured more than 200, according to CBS Boston’s report on Russell’s death. The scale of the tragedy is an essential part of the history of that performance; it should not be reduced to a footnote in an account of the band.

Russell’s legacy includes his work as a hard-rock vocalist, Great White’s hit recordings and the public memory of the Station fire. His family described him as remembered for his “sense of humour, exceptional zest for life and unshakeable contribution to rock and roll,” in a statement reported by RTÉ.
