To learn an instrument, choose one that fits the music you want to make and the practical realities of your life, then practise it regularly in small, focused steps. There is no single best beginner instrument or daily practice quota: steady work on manageable material, with useful feedback when available, is a more reliable starting point than trying to master everything at once.

Choose an instrument you’ll want to practise

Start with the music you hope to play. Then consider where you’ll practise, how much noise is practical, what instrument you can access, and whether you can find suitable guidance. No instrument is best for every beginner; the right choice depends on your musical aims and circumstances.

For example, piano’s visible layout may appeal if you want to see how notes relate across the keyboard. Guitar or ukulele may suit someone drawn to playing chords or accompanying other musicians. These are starting points, not rankings. A useful question is not simply “Which instrument is easiest?” but “Which instrument and kind of music will keep me curious enough to return to practice?” The British Council also frames this as a personal choice in its guide, “Which musical instrument shall I learn?”

  • Musical aim: Think about the songs, sounds, or role you want to explore.
  • Practical fit: Take account of space, noise, cost, and access to an instrument you can play.
  • Technique and support: Consider whether the instrument feels comfortable to handle and whether useful learning resources or a teacher are available.

If you decide on piano or keyboard, a beginner digital keyboard is one possible way to start; if you choose guitar, a beginner guitar is another. The learning guidance cited here does not establish a particular model, feature set, price, or brand as best.

Can adults learn an instrument?

Yes. Age alone is not a reason to rule out learning. University of Maryland music education associate professor Stephanie Prichard puts the practical issue this way: “As an adult, it’s not that it’s harder, it’s that you need to seek out the right kind of guidance, the right kinds of resources.” The University of Maryland feature offers examples such as piano, guitar, and ukulele, but an adult beginner’s choice still depends on their own aims and circumstances.

Learning later in life can include reading notation, playing by ear, developing technique, practising strategically, or learning informally. A peer-reviewed chapter by pianist and educator Y. Zhukov surveys these approaches and learning across the life course; it does not establish one special method that every adult beginner must follow.

Get started with a simple, supported progression

Choose one instrument to focus on, find an accessible beginner resource or teacher if you want guidance, and work through material in a sequence that lets you build on what you can already do. A teacher or lesson can provide feedback and help shape that progression, but the available evidence does not show that every learner needs the same lesson format or schedule.

Early playing can involve coordinating several unfamiliar demands at once. When reading a melody, for instance, a beginner may need to track note names, key and time signatures, tempo, where notes fall on the keyboard, finger choices, and control of the sound. Adding too much new material at once can make that coordination harder. The UK Department for Education’s review of music education recommends careful sequencing and consolidation rather than treating one exposure as lasting mastery.

Instrument technique is also specific. Skills developed on one instrument may transfer only to a limited extent to another, so if your goal is expressive playing, sustained work on your chosen instrument is generally more useful than briefly sampling many without building technique on any of them.

Make each practice session focused and achievable

Build a regular routine that you can sustain. The Department for Education review describes “little and often” as useful for acquiring procedural skills and stresses that learning needs consolidation after initial exposure. It does not specify a universal daily quota or a timeline to fluency, so choose a routine that fits your life rather than treating a fixed number of minutes as a guarantee.

Bob Duke and Amy Simmons at the University of Texas at Austin’s Center for Music Learning recommend making most practice material playable and concentrating on a small improvement at a time. Their practice guidance suggests keeping as much of the intended music intact as possible while simplifying a passage that is currently too difficult.

  1. Pick one small goal. Decide what you are working on, such as making a run even or beginning a note clearly, rather than trying to correct everything at once.
  2. Choose material within reach. Spend most of the session on music you can play or can make manageable with a modest adjustment.
  3. Listen for the sound you want. Imagine or sing the target before playing, then notice whether your sound is moving toward it.
  4. Check how playing feels. Pay attention to whether your posture and movements feel comfortable; ease and sound quality can offer useful clues about your technique.
  5. Split up a long practice block. If you have a longer period available, use shorter sessions and vary the goals you address instead of pushing through one tiring block.
  6. End by naming an accomplishment. Identify one concrete thing that improved or that you can now play, however small.

What progress should feel like

Expect to revisit material. A first encounter with a skill is not the same as retaining it; repeated practice and applying what you have learned help consolidate it. Some forgetting after an initial exposure is normal, not proof that you lack ability.

Progress is better judged by specific changes than by a promise of rapid mastery: a passage becomes steadier, a note begins more clearly, or a musical idea is easier to produce. As your control grows, the material you can play comfortably can grow with it. Keep the aim small enough to work on, and let consistency—not a universal timeline—shape your expectations.
