To start playing guitar, choose an instrument that feels comfortable, tune it, learn a few clear notes and open chords, then practise steady strumming and chord changes before trying a simple song. You do not need to master music theory first; a reliable sequence and relaxed, repeatable practice are enough to get started.
1. Choose a guitar that suits you
There is no single best first guitar. Consider the music you want to play, how the instrument feels in your hands, and whether you want to manage extra equipment.
| Choice | What to consider |
|---|---|
| Acoustic | Can be played without an amplifier, which keeps the basic setup simple. The feel and sound vary by instrument; try one if possible. |
| Electric | Often has thinner strings, but you need an amplifier and instrument cable to play it through an amp. |
These are practical differences, not a universal ranking. Fender’s first-steps guide and guitar buying guide explain the trade-offs. If you are borrowing or buying an instrument, comfort and a playable setup matter more than choosing by label alone.
2. Learn the guitar’s basic parts and string names
Before playing, find the body, neck, fretboard, frets, tuning pegs, and strings. The frets are the metal bars across the fretboard; press a string just behind a fret to change its pitch.

- 38-inch beginner guitar: Measuring 38" (L) x 14" (W) x 3.25" (H), this beginner guitar delivers the timeless look and sound of a traditional acoustic guitar. Low string action helps reduce finger fatigue for easier playing and improved comfort while learning. Note: New strings may arrive out of tune, which is normal. As the strings stretch with use, the guitar will hold tuning better over time.
Standard tuning, named from the thickest string to the thinnest, is E–A–D–G–B–E. Those are the sixth, fifth, fourth, third, second, and first strings respectively. Fender’s beginner FAQ and Guitar 101 course introduce the instrument and its strings.
3. Tune before you practise
A guitar that is out of tune makes even correctly fingered chords sound wrong. Tune before playing, and check again if the instrument sounds off; string pitch can shift. Yamaha explains the reason for tuning before a session in its acoustic-guitar tuning guide.
You can use a clip-on electronic tuner, a phone tuning app, or an online tuner. A dedicated clip-on device is convenient if you prefer not to use a phone; apps and online tools are alternatives. Fender and Yamaha describe these tuning approaches in their Guitar 101 course, beginner FAQ, and Yamaha’s tuning guide.
4. Hold the guitar comfortably
Sit or stand in a way that lets you reach the fretboard without hunching or twisting. Rest the guitar securely against your body, keep your shoulders loose, and avoid sharply bending either wrist. If you play standing, adjust the strap so the guitar remains easy to reach.

Comfort helps you practise with less unnecessary tension. Stop and adjust your position if you feel sharp or persistent pain; discomfort is not a required stage of learning. Fender’s Guitar 101 course covers posture and getting familiar with the instrument.
5. Make clean single notes
Begin with one open string at a time: pick it or brush it gently with a finger, then listen for a clear, sustained sound. This helps you control the picking hand and hear whether the guitar is in tune.
Next, fret one note. Place a fingertip just behind the fret, press only as firmly as needed, and pick the string. If the note buzzes or sounds muted, check that your finger is not touching a neighbouring string and try moving it closer to the fret. Relax your hand between attempts rather than squeezing the neck.
6. Read a chord diagram
A chord diagram is a small map of the fretboard. The vertical lines represent strings, and the horizontal lines represent frets. Dots show where to place your fingers; numbers inside dots, when shown, identify the fingers. An open-string marker means play that string without fretting it, while an X means do not strum it.

Follow the diagram’s instructions for which strings to play. A chord shape can be fingered correctly but sound muddy if you strum strings that should be left out.
7. Learn three open chords
Open chords use a combination of fretted and unfretted strings. G, C, and D are common starting shapes. Fender’s beginner chord guide shows finger placements and the string ranges for these chords.
G major
Follow the G diagram and strum the indicated strings. Check each string separately before playing the full chord; adjust any finger that mutes a string that should ring.
C major
Form the C shape shown in the diagram and strum the specified strings rather than all six. Listen for clear notes, especially where fingers are close together.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.8. Practise chord changes and strumming
Once each chord sounds reasonably clear, practise changing between two shapes. Move slowly, lift and place fingers deliberately, and check the result before increasing the pace. JustinGuitar’s Grade 1 beginner course moves from first chords to chord changes, rhythm, and songs.
Add a simple, even down-strum. Keep the strumming hand moving at a comfortable pulse, even when a chord change takes longer than one beat. Start with two chords, then add another when the changes feel manageable. A steady rhythm and clean transition are more useful than speed.

9. Put the skills into a simple song
Choose a beginner song that uses chords you already know. Practise its chord order slowly, then add the strumming pattern. If a change breaks the rhythm, isolate that pair of chords and return to the song when the movement is smoother. Beginner lesson paths such as JustinGuitar’s Grade 1 course build toward playing songs rather than treating chords as an end in themselves.
10. Make practice repeatable
Use a short, focused routine: tune; warm up with open strings and a few fretted notes; review the chords; practise one difficult change; then play a song section. Keep the pace slow enough to hear mistakes and correct them. Return to tuning if the instrument begins to sound off.
Learning speed differs from person to person, so there is no guaranteed timetable for mastering guitar. A relaxed position, clear notes, and steady changes are useful signs of progress. Fender’s beginner lessons and JustinGuitar’s Grade 1 course offer structured lesson routes if you prefer guided instruction.
