Al Ewing envisioned The Immortal Thor as a mythic epic about gods, immortality and powers beyond Thor—not a continuation of the horror tone he brought to Immortal Hulk. In a June 6, 2023 interview with Zach Rabiroff for io9/Gizmodo, Ewing described the series’ intended tone, its place in Thor’s continuity and how new readers could approach its first issue.
Why Ewing called The Immortal Thor “divine fantasy”
Ewing contrasted the series with his earlier Marvel work: “If Hulk was divine horror, Thor is divine fantasy—a mythological book about gods walking the earth, looking at hopefully interesting questions, but playing much more towards big epic elements than those big horror beats.” That was the writer’s description of the intended tone, not a critical verdict on either series.
He said Thor’s immortality would be central, and that the character would face forces much larger than himself. Ewing also described drawing on the Eddas and biblical elements while aiming for a run that could stand on its own.
What does Thor’s identity as a god mean in Ewing’s approach?
Ewing characterized Marvel’s Thor as “a big probably-an-alien with certain inborn powers, who’s been around for thousands of years and is the Same Guy From Some Myths.” In context, he was describing a fictional character in a comics interview: Thor’s divinity, as Ewing framed it, is partly magical and metaphorical. He distinguished Thor from the One Above All rather than presenting him as the supreme being of Marvel’s universe.

Where the story begins in Thor’s continuity
Ewing said the story would start with Thor as King of Asgard and retain the importance of his All-Father role. He wanted to build on the character’s growth rather than undo it. The setting would move between Asgard and Midgard, allowing the story to explore Thor both as a powerful ruler and as a familiar presence on Earth.
His plan for issue #1 was a fresh entry point that still connected to existing continuity. Ewing said Donald Blake would be absent at the opening and Loki would be part of the story. These were statements of his intentions in 2023, not a guide to the series’ later publication status.
