African American gospel music took recognizable shape in the 1930s, bringing together older spiritual and hymn traditions, rural gospel, and the exuberant worship of Holiness-Pentecostal churches. Its history is not a simple line from one African rhythm to one American genre: it is a changing sacred tradition shaped by Black communities, musical exchange, church debate, new instruments, and performers who carried it beyond worship services.
Spirituals came first, but they are not the same as gospel
Spirituals were religious folksongs created and sung by enslaved people of African descent in the American South. They were passed on orally and often used call-and-response: a leader sang a phrase and a group answered. The Library of Congress distinguishes spirituals from later gospel in their historical context, performance, and documentation. Its introduction to African American spirituals offers a starting point for understanding that earlier tradition.
After emancipation, spirituals and camp-meeting songs helped shape gospel-style singing. The Library of Congress describes African American gospel as rooted in solo and responsive church singing in the South. That connection matters, but it does not make spirituals and gospel interchangeable: gospel emerged later, in new settings and with its own repertoire and styles. The Library of Congress overview of African American song traces the wider musical context.
How gospel took shape in the 1930s
The Library of Congress places gospel’s emergence as a recognizable form in the 1930s, when three strands converged:

This convergence was not a single invention or a uniform sound. Gospel developed through different communities and practices. As the Library of Congress account puts it: “During the 1930s, Gospel music emerged from the coalescing of three types of musical activity.”
Thomas A. Dorsey and the sacred-secular debate
Thomas A. Dorsey became a central figure in gospel’s development in Chicago. Before concentrating on sacred music, he was a blues and jazz composer and pianist. He and vocalist Sallie Martin blended elements from blues into sacred song forms, helping establish an influential gospel style.

That musical combination drew resistance. Some early church leaders objected because Dorsey’s energetic gospel sounded associated with ragtime, blues, and jazz. The dispute was about more than instruments or rhythm: it reflected disagreement over which musical sounds belonged in church. The evidence establishes this resistance, but not a single theological definition of sin as the cause of gospel’s evolution. The Smithsonian Center for Folklife and Cultural Heritage’s history of rhythm and blues discusses Dorsey’s musical background and Chicago work.
African rhythms: a useful frame, not a single source
African American sacred music grew from Black communities’ histories and musical traditions. Call-and-response in spirituals is one documented feature of that inheritance, and gospel later developed through musical blending. But the historical account here does not identify every gospel rhythm as a direct survival from a particular African culture or source. “African rhythms” is therefore best understood as a broad framing for a complex history, not a precise explanation for every beat, vocal pattern, or regional style.

What the Hammond organ changed—and what it did not
The Hammond organ belongs in gospel’s history as an instrument churches adopted, not as the sole cause of the genre’s development. Hammond introduced its first electric organ in 1935. Smithsonian Magazine reports that churches bought more than 1,750 within three years. The instrument appealed to African American congregations whose members had migrated north and worshipped in communities without the means for a pipe organ. The account is about church adoption; it does not establish that every congregation or gospel style used a Hammond.
The organ’s place in gospel is part of a broader story of practical choices about sound and worship. A piano-led accompaniment and an organ-led one are not interchangeable labels for whole traditions: instrumentation varied, and neither alone explains regional or denominational differences. A Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture record for a 1968 Hammond B-3 identifies it as an electronic musical instrument.

Mahalia Jackson carried gospel to wider audiences
Dorsey helped shape gospel’s music; Mahalia Jackson helped broaden its reach. She began a Sunday-night radio show on CBS in 1954 and appeared on The Ed Sullivan Show in 1956. The National Museum of African American History and Culture says the television appearance helped bring gospel from churches and revivals into mainstream American music. Its history of Jackson’s career quotes Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. describing her voice: “A voice like hers comes along once in a millennium.”
From worship to broadcast and concert stages
Gospel’s movement beyond church services did not erase its worship function. Church singing, revivals, radio, and television created different performance settings and audiences. Jackson’s broadcasts show how a sacred tradition could reach listeners outside a congregation while remaining identifiable as gospel. That expansion was part of the music’s history, not proof that all gospel became secular entertainment.
