Alan Bond’s funeral was held at St Patrick’s Basilica in Fremantle on Friday, 12 June 2015. PerthNow reported that hundreds attended the Catholic service, where Perth car dealer John Hughes delivered the only eulogy and family members took part in prayers and readings. As the hearse left, mourners formed a guard of honour before the family departed for a private burial.
Where and when was Alan Bond’s funeral?
The service took place at St Patrick’s Basilica in Fremantle on Friday, 12 June 2015, a week after Bond died following complications from heart surgery. PerthNow described a traditional, simple Catholic service focused on family and close friends. It reported that hundreds attended and put the basilica’s capacity at about 600; it did not give an exact attendance count. PerthNow’s account of the funeral was published on the day of the service.
Who spoke and what did the service include?
John Hughes delivered the only eulogy
Perth car dealer John Hughes, a cousin of Bond’s first wife Eileen, gave the only eulogy, according to PerthNow. Hughes recalled Bond as generous, driven and influential in the early development of his car business. The report quotes Hughes calling him “the most unforgettable person I have ever met” and “an attractor of talent, a provider of opportunities.” These were Hughes’s personal reflections, not an independent assessment of Bond’s life.
Family members read prayers and tributes
Bond’s daughter Jody Fewster and grandson Dash Fewster read prayers. His surviving children were John, Craig and Jody; his former wife Eileen also attended. PerthNow quotes son John Bond saying, “To us however he was just dad. A father who tried to be the best dad he could.”

Hymns and readings
The service included readings and hymns identified by PerthNow as “Nearer My God to Thee,” “Amazing Grace” and “You’ll Never Walk Alone.” The report characterized the ceremony as personal and family-centred rather than a review of Bond’s business career.
How did mourners farewell Bond?
At the end of the service, mourners formed a guard of honour as the hearse and family departed. Bond was to be buried privately. PerthNow said the burial was believed to be at Fremantle Cemetery; the report did not confirm the location. A private wake followed at the Royal Perth Yacht Club. The article said those attending included business figures, yacht club members and surviving members of the 1983 Australia II crew.

The personal farewell and Bond’s public legacy
The funeral coverage placed personal memories alongside the contrasts in Bond’s public record. He bankrolled Australia II’s 1983 America’s Cup victory, a milestone that Bob Hawke, as quoted by PerthNow, remembered as “the man who lifted the spirits of this country in 1983.” Bond later went bankrupt and was imprisoned for corporate fraud. Those facts formed part of the report’s broader context, while tributes at the service largely emphasized family, friendship and personal recollections.
After the funeral, Eileen Bond told PerthNow, “We did him proud.” Her remark reflected the family’s sense of the farewell, rather than settling the larger debate over Bond’s legacy.
