His family confirmed his death; contemporaneous reporting said he had been suffering from cancer. This is a historical account, not breaking news.
What happened
Rickman’s family confirmed his death. The Guardian reported on 14 January 2016 that he died in London, surrounded by family and friends, and had been suffering from cancer: the Guardian’s contemporaneous report.
More than Severus Snape
Rickman portrayed Snape in the Harry Potter films, a role that introduced him to many younger viewers. But his career ranged well beyond the wizarding world. He played the villain Hans Gruber in Die Hard and the Sheriff of Nottingham in Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves; he was also an accomplished stage actor whose career included work with the Royal Shakespeare Company. The British Film Institute’s overview of Rickman’s screen roles and the Guardian obituary describe the breadth of that work.
Tributes after his death
J. K. Rowling, author of the Harry Potter books, said: “There are no words to express how shocked and devastated I am to hear of Alan Rickman’s death. He was a magnificent actor & a wonderful man”. The Guardian reported her words in its coverage.
