Adam McKay did not announce that Wicked would be banned. In an X post on December 23, 2024, he said he “wouldn’t be surprised” if Wicked: Part One were banned in three to five years if America continued on the political path he described. That was a conditional prediction—not a government plan, legal decision, or measured forecast.
What did Adam McKay say about Wicked?
McKay, the filmmaker, was responding to a viewer who said they would wait to watch the film when it reached streaming. As reported by Mediaite and The Independent, his December 23, 2024 X reply included: “If America keeps going on the track it is I wouldn’t be surprised to see the movie banned in 3-5 years.”
He also described Wicked: Part One as politically radical, saying it was about “radicalization in the face of careerism, fascism, propaganda.” Those are McKay’s interpretations of the film, not neutral findings or statements made by the film’s cast, studio, or a public authority.
Was the prediction a ban announcement or a forecast?
It was a forecast framed as a possibility. The phrase “3-5 years” is McKay’s speculative time horizon, not a statistical estimate: the contemporaneous reports identify no poll, study, probability, or count establishing how likely a U.S. ban was. Neither report presents his post as evidence of an enacted restriction or a government plan.

The word “ban” can also describe different things. A nationwide legal prohibition would be distinct from a local or venue-specific screening restriction, or from a school or library limiting access to a book. The December 2024 coverage is about McKay’s prediction concerning the 2024 film in the United States; it does not establish that any such restriction occurred.
Which Wicked does the claim concern?
McKay was discussing the 2024 film Wicked: Part One. It is distinct from the Broadway musical and Gregory Maguire’s novel. Mediaite describes the adaptation path from Maguire’s novel to the stage musical and then the film, but a restriction on a book or school-library access would not, by itself, amount to a ban on the movie.

Where could viewers watch the film?
Official release information shows that the film had ordinary home-viewing routes after its theatrical release. Universal Pictures Home Entertainment announced digital purchase and rental availability beginning December 31, 2024, followed by 4K UHD, Blu-ray, and DVD editions beginning February 4, 2025. Universal’s home-entertainment announcement documents those release dates.
Peacock’s official page, updated March 20, 2026, says Wicked: For Good began streaming there that day and that both films would be available on Peacock starting May 21, 2026. This confirms an official streaming route described by Peacock at that time, not universal availability in every place or screening venue. Peacock’s announcement is the source for those dates; streaming catalogs can change.

What can be concluded now?
The headline captures McKay’s conditional warning, not an actual ban. His post expressed concern about a possible future political direction; the available reporting does not establish a ban, a government move to impose one, or the probability of one. The dated release announcements instead document digital, physical-media, and Peacock viewing options at particular points in time.
