AC/DC’s “It’s A Long Way To The Top (If You Wanna Rock ’N’ Roll)” clip was made for ABC’s Countdown in 1976. Former Countdown producer and director Paul Drane later recalled that it cost “about 300 bucks.” The low-budget idea put the band on a flat-bed truck moving along Melbourne’s Swanston Street, with bagpipes included at Bon Scott’s request.
How the truck-and-bagpipes idea came together
Drane recalled that Countdown presenter Molly Meldrum expected “Long Way to the Top” to become a major hit. Bon Scott wanted bagpipes in the clip, and Drane proposed having the band perform on a truck as it traveled along Swanston Street. Scott was enthusiastic about the idea, according to Drane’s account in ABC’s 2024 transcript: ABC’s account of the clip’s making.
The resulting performance was filmed on a flat-bed truck moving through Melbourne’s central business district. Rolling Stone AU/NZ dates the filming to February 1976: Rolling Stone AU/NZ’s account.
What the $300 figure means
Drane, who was a Countdown producer and director from 1975 to 1977, recalled: “And the whole clip was made for about 300 bucks.” ABC’s 2024 transcript reports that estimate, and ABC’s short-form description also gives the budget as $300. It is a retrospective approximation, not an itemized production ledger; the available accounts do not specify the camera, crew size, truck owner, or how the money was spent.

Which video—and which song
The story concerns AC/DC’s Countdown clip for “It’s A Long Way To The Top (If You Wanna Rock ’N’ Roll),” not every music video associated with a $300 budget. The National Film and Sound Archive documents a separate $300 clip: Daddy Cool’s “Eagle Rock,” directed by Chris Löfvén. The NFSA’s account of “Eagle Rock” describes that different production.
AC/DC’s official track listing places “It’s A Long Way To The Top (If You Wanna Rock ’N’ Roll)” on the album T.N.T.: AC/DC’s official music listing.

Why the clip is remembered
The truck performance, Melbourne street setting, and bagpipes make the clip immediately distinctive. ABC describes it as iconic, but the available sources do not establish a comparative ranking that would prove it is AC/DC’s single “most iconic” video. Drane also recalled hearing that it had passed 35 million viewings, but his transcript does not identify a platform or date the count, so that figure should not be treated as a current verified total.
