That does not make it the top film in every market: Japan’s May 2026 domestic chart still places Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba – The Movie: Mugen Train first. Because the available sources do not provide one consistent, current worldwide dataset for nine titles, a definitive numbered global top nine cannot be responsibly assembled from them.
What “highest-grossing” means here
This comparison is about theatrical box-office revenue, not franchise earnings, merchandise, home video, or streaming. “Worldwide” grosses combine ticket revenue across markets and are nominal amounts: they are not adjusted for inflation or compared by ticket admissions. Re-releases can add to a film’s cumulative total, while exchange rates and reporting practices can affect the reported dollar figure.

Those distinctions matter because the sources available here do not use one harmonized method or cutoff date for every film. A worldwide total and a Japan-only total answer different questions; a domestic ranking cannot be used as a substitute for a global one.
The reported worldwide record: Infinity Castle
GamesRadar+ reported on April 13, 2026, that Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba – Infinity Castle had reached $738.5 million worldwide after North American and UK re-releases. The report described it as the highest-grossing anime film. This is a dated reported total, not a live box-office feed: GamesRadar+’s April 2026 report.
#1 Best Overall
Japan’s chart gives a different result. TOHO’s May 2026 domestic animation figures, based on data from Kogyo Tsushinsha, list Mugen Train at ¥40.75 billion and Infinity Castle at ¥40.21 billion. So Infinity Castle is the reported worldwide leader in the cited account, while Mugen Train remained ahead in Japan in that snapshot. The figures are Japan-only, not worldwide totals: TOHO’s animation box-office chart.

ONE Esports published a global anime-film ranking on May 29, 2024, before Infinity Castle opened. It reported historical worldwide figures for several titles, including Suzume ($323,638,107), The Boy and the Heron ($294,217,033), The First Slam Dunk ($279,045,965), One Piece Film: Red ($246,570,000), Howl’s Moving Castle ($237,536,126), Ponyo ($204,826,668), and Jujutsu Kaisen 0 ($196,290,952). Those are ONE Esports’ 2024 figures, not current totals, and the outlet’s list cannot account for a later release and re-releases: ONE Esports’ May 2024 ranking.

Combining those older estimates with a newer total for one film would create a mixed-date list, not an audited current ranking. The figures can also vary with re-release accounting and source methodology. The responsible answer is therefore to identify the reported worldwide record and show dated comparisons, rather than give nine exact global ranks that the cited sources cannot support.

How to read anime box-office rankings
- Check geography: look for “worldwide” or “Japan domestic.” A national chart does not establish a global position.
- Check the cutoff: re-releases can change cumulative grosses, so a ranking needs a date as well as a source.
- Check the measure: nominal revenue, inflation-adjusted revenue, and ticket admissions are different comparisons.
- Check currency and method: do not compare a yen domestic figure directly with a worldwide dollar figure as if they were equivalent.
