Ryan Gosling and Emily Blunt turned the “Barbenheimer rivalry” into a joke at the 96th Academy Awards: they pretended to have a frosty exchange, teased each other about their films and awards-season fortunes, then called for a truce. It was stage banter, not evidence of a real feud.
What did Gosling and Blunt say?
At the March 10, 2024 ceremony, Gosling, nominated for Barbie, and Blunt, nominated for Oppenheimer, played up the idea that their films were rivals. ITV’s contemporaneous account described the exchange as a “fake spat.” The following lines are reported by ITV, rather than taken from a published Academy transcript.
Blunt suggested Gosling’s greeting seemed “rather frosty.” He replied, “Not at all, I’m just happy that we can finally put this Barbenheimer rivalry behind us.” Blunt called herself “Kitty” and Gosling “Ken,” then joked that awards season had not amounted to much of a rivalry.
Gosling also teased the mash-up name, asking why it was “Barbenheimer” rather than “Oppenbarbie.” Blunt answered with a “Ken-splaining” crack about Gosling painting on his abs to get nominated, adding, “you don’t see Robert Downey doing that.” ITV reported that the pair briefly wrestled over the microphone before Gosling said, “This is insane Emily, this has got to stop, we’ve got to squash this.” ITV reported the exchange.

Why the “Barbenheimer” joke landed
Barbenheimer was the public shorthand for the unlikely pairing of two very different 2023 films, Barbie and Oppenheimer. The Oscars banter borrowed that familiar label and made it a pretend contest between Ken and Kitty. Gosling’s abs joke and Blunt’s reply folded the actors’ roles and their supporting-actor nominations into the gag.
The setup worked because the films had been discussed together throughout the awards season, even as their Oscar outcomes differed. The Academy’s 2024 nominee materials list Gosling with Barbie in supporting actor and Blunt with Oppenheimer in supporting actress. The ceremony was the 96th Academy Awards, held at the Dolby Theatre at Ovation Hollywood on March 10, 2024, honoring films released in 2023. The Academy’s ceremony page lists the nominees and winners.

How the films fared at the 2024 Oscars
The awards record gives the joke its context, but it does not make the exchange a real competition between the performers.
- Oppenheimer received 13 nominations, according to the Academy, and won seven awards at the ceremony, including Best Picture, according to ABC.
- Barbie received eight nominations, according to the Academy, and won Best Original Song for “What Was I Made For?” by Billie Eilish and Finneas O’Connell, according to ABC.
The nominations were part of the Academy’s awards process, not a head-to-head contest between Gosling and Blunt. The Academy says members of each of 18 branches nominate within their branches, subject to specified committee exceptions; all voting members may select Best Picture nominees. The Academy’s nominations announcement explains the process. The ceremony was televised in more than 200 territories, according to the Academy Press Office.

Was the Barbenheimer feud real?
No evidence in the reported exchange establishes a private feud. ITV framed it as a fake spat, and the lines themselves were constructed around the films’ public rivalry, their characters and the awards conversation. The safest reading is that Gosling and Blunt were performing a joke for the Oscars audience.
The Academy notes that its transcripts are not distributed immediately and are intended for legitimate press representatives; the wording here comes from ITV’s report, not an official public transcript.
