Latin American heritage is not something you can reliably recognize by looking at someone. A People en Español roundup published on October 7, 2022, named nine performers with varied family backgrounds, from Puerto Rican and Argentine roots to mixed Indigenous, European, and Caribbean heritage. The list is an editorial selection, not a ranking or a definitive statement of how each person identifies.

What the roundup means by “Latinas”

The headline uses “Latinas” as shorthand for the performers’ reported Latin American ancestry or family connections. Those are not interchangeable with personal identity: ancestry describes family origins, family culture describes traditions and relationships, and an identity label is one a person may or may not choose for themselves. The roundup’s accounts should therefore be read as reported background, not as proof that every performer uses the same label.

Its central point is that heritage can be multiracial and is not reliably visible. The nine profiles below reflect the family origins and comments attributed to the performers in the 2022 article; they are not independent biographical verifications.

The nine performers named

Aubrey Plaza

The roundup describes Plaza as half Puerto Rican and half Irish, and says she identifies strongly with her Puerto Rican family. It attributes these remarks to an interview on the podcast Highly Relevant: “I identify with my Puerto Rican family probably more than anything else,” and “The Puerto Rican side of my family, that was just home to me.”

Alexis Bledel

The article describes Bledel as the daughter of Argentine parents who grew up in a Spanish-speaking household. It presents those details as family background, rather than as a claim about which identity label she personally uses.

Bella Thorne

The roundup describes Thorne as having Cuban, Italian, and Irish ancestry and reproduces comments it attributes to an Instagram post. In one, she wrote: “Honestly I wish I looked more Latin so I could feel more Latin so I could feel closer to my father and be prouder of my heritage…to wear my heritage on my skin.” The article also quotes: “It’s just hard sometimes when no one thinks u are who u are…and everyone wants u to be something else :/ I LOVE MY CUBAN HERITAGE.” The article does not establish the original post’s date or provide broader context for either quotation.

Sara Paxton

Paxton is described as half Mexican. The roundup offers that heritage detail without a first-person statement from her in the material summarized here.

Tori Kelly

The article describes Kelly as Puerto Rican, Irish, and Jamaican. It attributes this comment about her family to People Chica: “My dad is half Puerto Rican and half Jamaican, and I’m very proud of that Caribbean side of me.”

Q’orianka Kilcher

Kilcher is described as Peruvian and of Quechua-Huachipaeri descent. The roundup includes this specific Indigenous heritage within the broader list of Latin American family backgrounds.

Anya Taylor-Joy

The article says Taylor-Joy was born in Miami to Argentine and British parents. It reports her family origins rather than making a claim about her personal identity.

Alex Meneses

Meneses is described as the daughter of a Ukrainian father and a Mexican American mother. Her profile is another example of the mixed family backgrounds represented in the roundup.

Auli’i Cravalho

The roundup describes Cravalho as Chinese, Portuguese, Puerto Rican, and Irish. It reproduces this fragment from a tweet: “[P]eople surprised i’m latin like cravalho is hawaiian or something.” The article does not supply the original tweet’s date or further context.

What the list does—and does not—show

  • The performers’ reported backgrounds span Argentine, Puerto Rican, Cuban, Mexican, and Peruvian roots, alongside Indigenous, Caribbean, European, and Asian ancestry.
  • Some profiles include first-person remarks about family or heritage; others provide only a biographical description attributed to the roundup.
  • The article appeared on October 7, 2022. That date is not the date of the interviews or social-media posts it quotes, which are not consistently identified.
  • Neither appearance nor a family-history summary can settle how a person identifies. The list is best understood as a reminder that heritage and identity are personal and can be complex.
