Bob Dylan’s “Mr. Tambourine Man” working drafts reportedly sold for $508,000 (£417,000) at auction in January 2025. The lot was not a single clean copy of the finished lyric: it comprised two yellow typewritten sheets containing three successive drafts, with revisions and annotations described in auction coverage. Its reported estimate was $400,000 to $600,000.
What sold for $508,000?
The lot consisted of two yellow sheets bearing three progressive drafts of “Mr. Tambourine Man.” The Guardian reported annotations on the third draft; JustCollecting described four sides of yellow paper with typed deletions and handwritten changes attributed to Dylan. Together, those accounts present the pages as a record of the song being revised, rather than simply a final lyric sheet.
The publications describe the pages and their revisions, but the available reporting does not independently establish the artifact’s physical condition or provide an authentication report.
How did the pages reportedly come to auction?
The provenance story reported by The Guardian is that Dylan spent the night writing and rewriting the song on a typewriter at music journalist Al Aronowitz’s New Jersey home in March 1964. Dylan discarded early drafts, and Aronowitz reportedly found the crumpled pages in his waste bin. The papers were later offered as part of Aronowitz’s personal collection; JustCollecting said his family arranged the sale.

The reporting does not establish whether the $508,000 includes a buyer’s premium. Nor does a single auction result show a broader market trend: the sources provide no like-for-like manuscript comparisons or formal valuation analysis.
What else was in the auction?
The Guardian reported that the dedicated Dylan auction comprised 60 items, 50 of them from Aronowitz’s personal collection. Julien’s Auctions said the collection brought in nearly $1.5 million, according to the Guardian. A Dylan-owned and played 1983 Fender Telecaster reportedly sold for $222,250, but that instrument is broader sale context—not a direct comparison for lyric manuscripts.

Why the pages matter to the song’s history
These sheets offer a view of composition in progress: three drafts on the same working document, with reported deletions and handwritten alterations. That makes the object different from a recording, a printed lyric, or a reproduction. Its significance in the auction coverage rests on the visible process of revision and the reported connection to Aronowitz, who was both a music journalist and the collector associated with the pages.
The auction is complete; the reports describe a historical sale, not an artifact currently offered for purchase. The 2025 result has also been cited in later coverage of a separate Dylan lyric draft discovered in an Allen Ginsberg book, but that later discovery is unrelated to the provenance of these “Mr. Tambourine Man” sheets.
