In February 2021, the Beach Boys sold Iconic Artists Group a controlling interest in a defined bundle of band-related intellectual property—not every right to every recording and song. The reported deal covered master recordings, the Beach Boys brand, selected compositions and memorabilia; members and heirs retained an interest. The sale price and exact ownership percentages were not disclosed.
What did the Beach Boys sell?
TheWrap reported on February 18, 2021, that Iconic Artists Group, a new venture led by Irving Azoff, acquired a controlling interest in specified Beach Boys intellectual property. The reported categories were sound recordings, the band brand, selected musical compositions and memorabilia. Iconic later described the bundle as master recordings, a portion of publishing, the brand and memorabilia.
“Controlling interest” describes the deal’s position in the assets included; it does not mean that Iconic acquired every Beach Boys-related right. TheWrap said members and heirs retained an interest in the acquired assets. The reports do not provide an asset-by-asset schedule or the precise percentage of any retained stake.
Who owns the Beach Boys catalog now?
There is no single answer for every recording and composition. Music Business Worldwide reported that much of the group’s 1960s-era catalog remained owned by Universal Music Group, which had acquired Beach Boys recordings through EMI’s 2012 sale. That distinction means the 2021 Iconic transaction should not be described as a sale of the entire catalog.

| Right or asset | What the 2021 reporting says | Ownership detail available |
|---|---|---|
| Sound recordings or masters | Included among the reported assets in the Iconic deal | No complete asset list or percentage breakdown is reported; much of the 1960s-era catalog was reported to remain with Universal Music Group. |
| Musical compositions or publishing | Selected compositions, described by Iconic as a portion of publishing, were included | The reporting does not identify every composition or specify ownership percentages. |
| Band name and brand | Included in the reported intellectual-property bundle | The deal reports do not give a detailed schedule of brand rights. |
| Memorabilia | Included in the reported bundle | The reporting does not itemize the memorabilia or set out separate ownership terms. |
These categories can carry different rights and owners. A master recording is not the same asset as the underlying song composition, and neither is the same as a band name or physical memorabilia. The available reporting establishes broad categories, not a complete accounting of who controls each individual asset.
What did the members and heirs retain?
TheWrap reported that members and heirs kept an interest in the assets acquired by Iconic. Music Business Worldwide said that retained interest was intended to let them share in potential upside from Iconic’s marketing and promotion. The cited reports do not state the exact percentage or define the detailed financial terms.

The parties presented the transaction as a partnership around the group’s legacy. In TheWrap’s February 2021 report, Brian Wilson, Mike Love, Al Jardine and the Carl Wilson estate said they wanted a partner to expand opportunities for the brand while preserving the band’s tradition. Azoff called the Beach Boys “an American treasure,” while Chastan described being entrusted with the band’s art and legacy as “humbling and thrilling.” Those remarks reflect the participants’ stated aims, not a guarantee of particular outcomes.

The 2021 rights transaction does not determine where every current edition is sold or streamed. For physical editions, Universal Music Japan lists a Pet Sounds on vinyl, released August 26, 2026, and a Pet Sounds Sessions Highlights CD released May 15, 2026. These releases are not evidence that the corresponding assets were part of Iconic’s 2021 acquisition.
