Milla Blake has a reported, loose connection to wellness influencer Jess Ainscough; the series’ other characters should not be assumed to represent specific real people.
Who is in the cast of Apple Cider Vinegar?
The Netflix limited series was created by Samantha Strauss and directed by Jeffrey Walker. Its central roles and supporting cast are:

|---|---|---|
| Kaitlyn Dever | Belle Gibson | The wellness influencer at the center of the story, whose public claims about cancer and alternative treatments drive the drama. |
| Alycia Debnam-Carey | Milla Blake | A young woman who builds a platform around food and cancer, and whose story offers a separate perspective on wellness culture. |
| Aisha Dee | Chanelle | Milla’s close friend, who meets Belle and works with her business in the show. |
| Tilda Cobham-Hervey | Lucy | A woman whose cancer diagnosis brings her into Belle’s online community. |
| Mark Coles Smith | Justin | Lucy’s husband, a journalist pursuing justice for people deceived by Belle. |
| Ashley Zukerman | Clive | Belle’s partner in the series, who believes her cancer claims. |
| Susie Porter | Tamara Blake | Milla’s mother. |
| Matt Nable | Joe Blake | Milla’s father, who is skeptical of unconventional cancer treatment. |
| Phoenix Raei | Hek | Belle’s crisis manager as public opinion turns against her. |
| Chai Hansen | Arlo | A school acquaintance of Milla who reconnects with her at a wellness retreat. |
| Richard Davies | Sean | An investigative journalist looking into Belle’s story. |
| Essie Davis | Natalie | Belle’s mother in the drama. |
| Kieran Darcy-Smith | Andrew | Belle’s stepfather in the drama. |
| Catherine McClements | Julie Gibbs | An editor interested in publishing Belle’s cookbook. |
Netflix Tudum’s cast guide credits Richard Davies as Sean; an earlier Netflix announcement spells the actor’s name Rick Davies. The table follows the later cast guide.
Is Apple Cider Vinegar a true story?
It is inspired by real events, but Netflix calls it a work of fiction rather than a biopic. The series draws on Beau Donelly and Nick Toscano’s 2017 nonfiction book The Woman Who Fooled the World, which reports on people misled by Gibson and the effects on them. Netflix says the adaptation fictionalizes events and combines or creates characters. Gibson was not involved in the series.

Belle Gibson is based on a real person
Kaitlyn Dever plays Belle Gibson, the Australian influencer whose claims are at the heart of the story. Gibson said she had cured terminal brain cancer through alternative therapies and nutrition. Netflix reports that Donelly and Toscano exposed her unfounded claims about charitable donations from her wellness app in 2015, prompting wider scrutiny of her story, including her cancer claims. Netflix also reports that Gibson was eventually fined under Australian Consumer Law for misleading or deceptive conduct and unconscionable conduct. The series dramatizes her story; it is not medical evidence or advice. Netflix’s account of the real events.
Milla Blake has a loose connection to Jess Ainscough
Milla is not a scene-for-scene portrayal of one real person. Creator Samantha Strauss described her as “a portrait of influencers at the time.” TIME reports that Milla is based mainly on Jess Ainscough, a real wellness influencer who chronicled her approach to cancer and died in 2015. But Ainscough and Gibson were not friends; the relationship between their characters in the series is fictionalized. TIME’s discussion of the real-life inspirations.

Supporting characters are not confirmed one-to-one portraits
Netflix’s official cast guide does not identify specific real-life counterparts for Chanelle, Lucy, Justin, Clive, Sean, or Belle’s family members. Their relationships and storylines should be read as part of the dramatization, not as confirmed history. Netflix’s general description allows for characters to be composites or inventions; it does not establish that every role maps to a particular person. Netflix Tudum’s cast and character guide.
What does the title mean?
Creator Samantha Strauss has described the title as referring to a “bottle of hope.” It does not mean apple cider vinegar is a cancer treatment. The series focuses on how wellness claims can circulate online and affect people facing illness; its plot should not be treated as evidence for any health intervention.
