The available sources support a 2009 statement about his private foundation, his participation in a cancer-research fundraiser and a reported benefit auction. They do not verify five personal gifts—or the viral claim that he donated 70 percent of his Matrix earnings.
Did Keanu Reeves donate 70 percent of his Matrix salary?
No. The Independent reported that Reeves’s publicist told Newsweek: “The story is not true, Keanu Reeves did not donate 70 per cent of his salary to charity”. The Independent also reported that the publicist confirmed the denial to its own publication. The often-repeated figure of $31.5 million stems from that disputed story; it is not a verified donation. The Independent’s report is the clearest cited correction.
What charitable support is documented?
These are three distinct reports about charitable activity, not three confirmed personal cash donations. Their evidence and what they establish differ:
| Reported activity | What the source establishes | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| Private foundation | In a 2009 interview with Ladies Home Journal, Reeves said his foundation “helps aid a couple of children’s hospitals and cancer research.” The Independent reported the interview. | The foundation’s name, recipients, grants and total giving. |
| Stand Up To Cancer special | The organization’s archive lists Reeves as a participant in its September 7, 2018 fundraising special. | A personal donation, pledge or payment from Reeves. |
| Camp Rainbow Gold auction | Vogue reported that a 15-minute Zoom date Reeves auctioned in June 2020 for the Idaho children’s cancer charity received bids reaching $16,600. | That Reeves personally donated $16,600; the figure is reported bidding, not a documented personal gift or charity transaction record. |
1. A private foundation for children’s hospitals and cancer research
In the 2009 interview reported by The Independent, Reeves said his private foundation helps children’s hospitals and cancer research. He also said, “I don’t like to attach my name to it, I just let the foundation do what it does.” Those remarks describe his stated charitable focus, but the cited material does not identify the foundation or disclose its beneficiaries, grants or total contributions. The Independent’s account is a report of the interview; the original interview is not established here.

2. Participation in Stand Up To Cancer
Stand Up To Cancer’s official event archive lists Reeves among participants in its September 7, 2018 fundraising special. That is evidence of participation in a fundraising event—not evidence that he made a personal donation or pledged a particular sum.
Stand Up To Cancer says donations support collaborative cancer-research programs. Its official site explains its relationship with the Entertainment Industry Foundation (EIF), through which expenses, including grants, are paid and distributed. Readers who want to learn about supporting the organization can use Stand Up To Cancer’s official website; this is not an endorsement or a claim about Reeves’s giving.

3. A Camp Rainbow Gold benefit auction
Vogue reported that Reeves auctioned a 15-minute Zoom date in June 2020 to benefit Camp Rainbow Gold, an Idaho children’s cancer charity. The bids reached $16,600, according to the magazine’s later coverage. That sum describes auction bidding for the benefit, not a cash donation by Reeves. The cited report is secondary coverage, rather than a transaction record from the charity. Read Vogue’s account of the auction.
Two claims that should not be counted as Reeves donations
The $31.5 million Matrix story
The alleged gift is not a verified donation: Reeves’s publicist denied the claim that he gave away 70 percent of his salary. The figure should not be counted as a charitable contribution. The Times of India also described it as based on an unsubstantiated claim in an October 5, 2026 review, but The Independent provides the stronger evidence because it reports the publicist’s denial. The Times of India’s review is corroboration, not proof of the alleged gift.
The Garron Family Cancer Centre gifts
The SickKids page attributes the centre’s gifts to the Garron family, not Reeves: a $30 million donation in 2010 to establish the Garron Family Cancer Centre, plus a separate $15 million commitment over 15 years beginning in 2021. Those amounts do not belong on a list of Reeves donations. SickKids’ account identifies the donors.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How much has Keanu Reeves donated?
The cited sources do not establish a total for Reeves’s personal charitable giving or document five separate donations. They give no audited account of his personal contributions. The most accurate answer is limited: Reeves publicly described a private foundation supporting children’s hospitals and cancer research; an official archive records his participation in a fundraising special; and secondary reporting describes a benefit auction. Those facts should not be turned into a donation total.
