Fall 2026 brings a mix of theatrical releases and streaming films, from adaptations and franchise chapters to horror, survival stories, animation, drama and documentary-style history. The examples below are a starting watchlist—not a verified list of 42: the available release guides do not establish that exact count. Dates and platforms can vary by country and change, so check the official listing for your market before making plans.
What movies are coming out this fall?
Here are notable films identified in fall release coverage. Fall means September through November here. The entries are examples, not a complete or independently verified 42-film selection; the cited sources do not substantiate the headline count. The season also includes titles beyond the handful below, and release schedules may change.
| Film | What it is | Release and viewing information |
|---|---|---|
| Verity | Amazon MGM psychological thriller adapted from Colleen Hoover’s novel, starring Anne Hathaway, Dakota Johnson and Josh Hartnett. | AP includes it in its fall release guide. The guide does not establish a date or viewing platform for every territory. [AP fall movie guide] |
| The Social Reckoning | Aaron Sorkin’s follow-up to The Social Network, with Jeremy Strong as Mark Zuckerberg and Mikey Madison as Frances Haugen. | Listed in AP’s fall release guide; check a current local listing for its date and format. [AP fall movie guide] |
| Street Fighter | A 1990s-set video-game adaptation directed by Kitao Sakurai and starring Andrew Koji and Noah Centineo. | Paramount’s official calendar lists October 16, 2026. Confirm local showtimes closer to release. [Paramount movies calendar] |
| Whalefall | A survival thriller about a scuba diver swallowed by a sperm whale. | Disney’s official slate lists October 16. Check the studio’s current listing for territory-specific details. [Disney entertainment slate] |
| Clayface | A DC Studios horror thriller about an actor whose face is disfigured by a gangster. | Included in AP’s fall guide; the cited description does not establish a specific date or platform for every market. [AP fall movie guide] |
| The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping | A new chapter in the franchise centered on Haymitch Abernathy. | Included in AP’s fall guide. Verify current local release details before planning a theater visit. [AP fall movie guide] |

What should I watch in theaters this fall?
For a theater-first shortlist, start with titles whose studio calendars identify theatrical releases, such as Street Fighter and Hexed. Disney also lists Whalefall for October 16. Those are announced release details, not a guarantee of showtimes in every town; the practical check is your local cinema’s schedule as the date approaches.
The Numbers’ schedule covers planned theatrical releases in the United States and Canada, not a global calendar. Use it for a North American planning reference, then confirm the title on a studio page or with a local theater. [The Numbers release schedule]

Which new movies are streaming this fall?
Streaming availability is platform- and country-specific. The Mosquito Bowl appears in Netflix Tudum’s fall lineup, but readers should check their local Netflix listing for current timing and availability. The other films in this guide should not be assumed to be streaming titles simply because an article describes them as fall releases. [Netflix Tudum fall lineup]
How to choose from the fall movie slate
- Pick by genre and tone: the examples span psychological and horror thrillers, survival stories, animation, franchise films and historical drama.
- Decide whether you want a theater or home release: studio theatrical dates and platform lineups answer different questions; check the relevant listing rather than treating “fall release” as a single format.
- Check familiarity with a franchise or source: Street Fighter, The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping and The Social Reckoning build on existing material, while Verity adapts Colleen Hoover’s novel.
- Confirm your local date: release calendars are not universal, and planned dates may change. A listing for the United States or Canada does not establish availability elsewhere.
What the “42 movies” count means
The cited AP guide, Rotten Tomatoes preview, studio calendars and Netflix lineup support a varied fall watchlist, but they do not verify a complete selection of exactly 42 films. Accordingly, the titles shown here are supported examples rather than a claim that this page contains a fully checked 42-film list. Any complete 42-title version needs a confirmed selection and a current release or platform listing for every entry.
