The Endurance22 expedition documented the wreck in place using sonar, high-resolution photography, video and 3D laser scanning—methods that together produced a detailed digital record, not a single scan from one instrument.
Where and when was Endurance found?
The Falklands Maritime Heritage Trust organized the Endurance22 expedition, which located the wreck at a depth of 3,008 metres in the Weddell Sea on 5 March 2022. The position was about four miles south of the coordinates Captain Frank Worsley recorded in 1915 and fell within the expedition’s predefined search area, according to the Trust’s discovery account and its position report.
Endurance sank in 1915. The discovery came more than a century later; the phrase “after a century underwater” is a broad description, not an exact 100-year interval.
How did the expedition document the wreck?
The 3D record was part of a wider, non-intrusive survey. The Endurance Conservation Management Plan, dated April 2024, lists multibeam and side-scan sonar, high-resolution digital photography, video filming and 3D laser scanning among the methods used to document the wreck. The survey recorded the ship where it rests rather than raising it.

The methods complement one another: photographs capture appearance, laser scanning records geometry, video supplies moving context, and sonar maps the seabed and helps locate features. The plan identifies their combined use, but does not publish a quantitative comparison of their performance.
What does “3D scan” mean in this case?
It describes a digital reconstruction assembled from more than one kind of input. The Trust reported approximately 25,000 high-resolution images associated with the scan work; the year for that image-count statement is not specified on the cited page. The Trust also credited deep-sea specialists including Deep Ocean Search, Ocean Infinity and Voyis. The Trust’s account of the imagery and Voyis’s project description discuss the imaging and laser-scanning inputs used in the reconstruction.

Image-based reconstruction and laser scanning are related but distinct: the former uses overlapping photographs to create a visual model, while laser scanning records surface geometry. The expedition’s digital record drew on both, interpreted alongside sonar and video survey material.
Can you see Endurance in 3D?
The scan data has been used beyond the underwater survey. The Falklands Maritime Heritage Trust announced an exhibition model made from Endurance22 scan data, intended to help public, scientific and student audiences engage with the wreck. For a film account of the expedition, National Geographic Documentary Films has an official page for Endurance. Its page also references The Ship Beneath the Ice, a 2024 book about maritime archaeology that includes Endurance. Documentary and book availability can vary by territory and edition.

The survey’s non-intrusive approach lets researchers create a detailed record while leaving the ship underwater. The April 2024 conservation plan treats the wreck as protected heritage and sets out a management context for its care. That distinction matters: the digital model makes the site easier to study and share, but it does not mean the vessel was recovered or that the scan replaces conservation of the wreck itself.
