Marlo Kelly plays Tatiana in Netflix’s 3 Body Problem, a believer whose idea of protecting people can lead to extreme, unsettling actions. The io9 interview is presented as Kelly discussing her approach to the role, but its landing page does not provide a transcript. Netflix’s own material offers a clear starting point for understanding Tatiana: her conviction, her loyalties and the gap between what she believes and what she does.
Who is Tatiana in 3 Body Problem?
Netflix identifies Marlo Kelly as Tatiana, a character raised from birth in Mike Evans’ organization. Netflix describes her as someone who devoted her life to welcoming outsiders “by any means necessary.” The phrase captures the tension at the heart of the character: hospitality is her stated purpose, but the means she accepts can be frightening.
Netflix’s recap calls Tatiana a believer in the San-Ti and describes her as the mysterious woman following members of the Oxford Five. Her story places her among the people and events through which the series explores belief, loyalty and humanity’s response to an alien presence. Netflix describes the show as inspired by Cixin Liu’s novel The Three-Body Problem; readers interested in the source material can find Netflix’s overview of the novel and adaptation.
What motivates Tatiana?
Kelly gives the character’s self-understanding in Netflix’s official cast video: “Tatiana is a protector. It comes from true belief that she is doing the right thing by the people around her, even if it seems extreme.”

That distinction between motivation and conduct is essential. Tatiana does not see herself as acting out of cruelty; she believes her actions serve people around her and a cause she considers righteous. But sincerity does not make her methods harmless or right. The series’ portrayal makes her conviction part of what is unsettling: she can interpret extreme behavior as protection.
How did Marlo Kelly approach playing Tatiana?
The io9 video interview is described as Kelly explaining how she approached the role, but the interview page does not include a transcript. Without access to the video’s full remarks, specific preparation methods, acting choices or opinions should not be attributed to Kelly. Her comments in Netflix’s cast video establish how she understands Tatiana’s belief and protective impulse, but they are not a record of everything she said to io9.

Why does Tatiana matter to the series?
Tatiana’s importance grows beyond her original conception. Netflix creator Alexander Woo said the character “didn’t really, in our original conception of it, have that many scenes,” but that she ended up in crucial moments in almost all episodes. He credited Kelly as an actor in explaining how the character became so significant.
That account helps explain why Tatiana can feel both mysterious and central: she follows members of the Oxford Five while carrying the convictions of Evans’ organization into key events. Netflix’s 2024 series guide describes 3 Body Problem as an eight-episode series, giving context to Woo’s observation about her recurring presence across the season.
