Banu Mushtaq and translator Deepa Bhasthi won the 2025 International Booker Prize for Heart Lamp, after the Kannada short-story collection was shortlisted. The winner was announced on 20 May 2025. It is the first short-story collection to win the prize, according to the Booker Prize Foundation.
Who won the 2025 International Booker Prize?
The award went jointly to author Banu Mushtaq and translator Deepa Bhasthi for Heart Lamp. The £50,000 prize was divided equally: £25,000 for Mushtaq and £25,000 for Bhasthi. Each of the six shortlisted books received £5,000, split equally between its author and translator; that shortlist award is separate from the winners’ prize. The Foundation describes Mushtaq as the second Indian author to win and Bhasthi as the first Indian translator to receive the International Booker.

The result also marked the first time a Kannada-translated book won the award. The Foundation’s 20 May 2025 announcement estimated that Kannada had 65 million speakers, including 38 million first-language speakers; those are figures from that release, not a newly verified count.
What is Heart Lamp about?
Heart Lamp is a collection of twelve stories written in Kannada between 1990 and 2023. Bhasthi selected and curated the stories for the English-language collection. The Booker Foundation describes them as portraying women and girls in patriarchal communities in southern India, and its book profile places the stories in Muslim communities. The subjects include women’s lives, reproductive rights, faith, caste, power and oppression.

Mushtaq is a writer, activist and lawyer in Karnataka. The Foundation says women who came to her seeking help inspired the stories. Mushtaq has described the emotional force behind her writing: “The pain, suffering, and helpless lives of these women create a deep emotional response within me, compelling me to write.”
Who translated Heart Lamp?
Deepa Bhasthi translated the stories from Kannada into English. A writer and literary translator based in Kodagu, southern India, Bhasthi has described her approach as “translating with an accent”: English that introduces Kannada words and retains a sense of the work’s cultural setting without exoticising it. In the Foundation’s winner announcement, she said the English carries “a very deliberate Kannada hum”. The Foundation notes that this was Mushtaq’s first book-length translation into English.
Max Porter, chair of the 2025 judges, praised the result as “a radical translation which ruffles language, to create new textures in a plurality of Englishes.”

The shortlist contained six books, and the Foundation does not present the other five as a ranked list. Heart Lamp was the collection of short stories among titles that included novels and other forms. Its Kannada source language and Bhasthi’s translation distinguish it within the shortlist; the books also range across different settings and subjects.
