A positive appraisal attributed to The Sunday Times appeared in reporting on July 7, 2025, ahead of the review embargo date cited by Forbes. But calling it a leaked review needs a qualification: Beebom described the Times item as a James Gunn interview containing a short review passage, not a conventional standalone review. Neither outlet’s account, on its own, establishes that the Times breached formal embargo terms.
What the reported early appraisal said
Beebom attributed the positive passage to Jonathan Dean of The Sunday Times and reproduced his verdict: “Superman, directed by James Gunn, is a triumph.” Dean’s passage praised the film as the version the character deserved after what he described as a long stretch of diminishing returns in screen reboots. The quotation is available here through Beebom’s reproduction, rather than direct verification against the original Times page. Beebom’s July 7 report

Beebom’s description matters to the headline: the Times item was an interview with Gunn that included a brief appraisal, rather than simply a standalone review appearing early. Beebom also reproduced Gunn’s comment that there were origin-story elements he did not need to revisit, including baby Kal-El arriving from Krypton in a rocket. Beebom’s account of the interview
Why reports called it a leak
Forbes reported on July 7 that the Superman review embargo was due to lift on July 8 and characterized the Times item as a very positive review. That establishes the embargo date as Forbes reported it; it does not independently establish the Times’s agreement or prove a contractual breach. The original Times page and formal embargo terms were not independently verified in the available reporting. Forbes’s July 7 coverage

Accordingly, “reported early publication” or “positive passage attributed to The Sunday Times” is more precise than stating as fact that the paper broke an embargo. The available accounts do not explain why the page appeared or whether it was removed.
How this differed from the earlier negative appraisal
The word “another” and the phrase “this time” refer to an earlier negative Daily Beast review discussed by Beebom and Forbes. The contrast is between two reported advance appraisals: one negative, one positive, with the positive passage coming from the Times interview. They are not a measure of the film’s overall critical response. Beebom and Forbes

The reports came just before the film’s US theatrical opening. The Associated Press wrote on July 9, 2025, that Superman was due in US theaters that Thursday; Beebom gave the release date as July 11, 2025. These are historical release details, not a current schedule. In the AP interview, Gunn described his aim as presenting a kind-hearted hero in contrast to what he saw as widespread cynicism and irony. Associated Press, July 9, 2025
