Reports differ slightly in punctuation and hyphenation. The Associated Press quoted Lennox as saying, “Artists for ceasefire, peace in the world” (Associated Press). The Forward rendered it as “Artists for cease-fire. Peace in the world” (The Forward). The National also reported the phrasing “Artists for cease-fire. Peace in the world” (The National). These are source-specific renderings, not a single standardized transcript.
Why did Lennox call for a ceasefire?
Her words aligned with the Artists for Ceasefire campaign, whose open letter to U.S. President Joe Biden called for immediate de-escalation and a ceasefire in Gaza and Israel, the release of hostages, and humanitarian aid, according to The National. The letter said: “We believe all life is sacred, no matter faith or ethnicity and we condemn the killing of Palestinian and Israeli civilians.” That statement belongs to the collective’s letter; it should not be mistaken for a longer speech by Lennox at the Grammys.

The National’s February 5, 2024 report also quoted the letter’s figures of “More than 25,000 people” killed and “over 60,000” injured over the preceding three months. Those were figures cited in the letter as reported at that time, not current totals.

Later in the ceremony, Recording Academy CEO Harvey Mason Jr. spoke separately about the October 7 attack on the Nova music festival and called for peace and unity. The Times of Israel reported him saying, “Music must always be our safe space. When that’s violated it strikes at the very core of who we are” (The Times of Israel). His remarks were a separate moment from Lennox’s closing words during the O’Connor tribute.
