In an interview with Access Hollywood, Birkhead, who was 18 at the time, described the garment as one of the few ways she could feel close to a mother she did not get to know.
Why the dress brought her to tears
Talking about wearing the dress at the gala, Birkhead said: “I can’t know my mom sadly, and this is one of the only reasons and ways I can. This is the closest I’ll ever be getting to a hug from her so I’ve been on and off tears the whole day.”
Her explanation was about the personal meaning of the garment: it gave her a tangible connection to Smith. The interview does not establish more about her private feelings, so her own words are the clearest account of why she became tearful.
The dress’s connection to the Barnstable Brown Gala
Birkhead wore the dress to the Barnstable Brown Gala in Louisville during Kentucky Derby weekend on May 2, 2025. Her father, Larry Birkhead, told Access Hollywood that Smith wore the same dress when she met him at the gala. That history made the outfit part of the family’s story, not simply a vintage fashion choice.

What is known about Dannielynn’s age and family context
Contemporary coverage by Us Weekly also identified Dannielynn as 18 at the 2025 event. That is her age at the time of the gala, not a statement about her present age.
In a 2012 interview, ABC News reported that Dannielynn was beginning to ask questions about her mother’s death and quoted Larry Birkhead discussing how he would explain Smith’s life. That earlier report provides dated family context; it does not establish what Dannielynn thinks or feels today.
