Her explanation was reported in connection with a TIME France interview; it was not presented as a new medical update.
Why did Angelina Jolie show her mastectomy scars?
“I share these scars with many women I love,” Jolie told TIME France, according to an AOL report credited to People. “And I’m always moved when I see other women share theirs.” She said she wanted to join them, knowing the magazine would share information about breast health, prevention and breast-cancer knowledge. AOL’s December 16, 2025 report reproduced the remarks from the interview.
That makes her stated reason both personal and tied to the interview’s subject: she wanted to be part of a conversation in which women share their experiences, alongside information about breast health. The comments do not amount to a new announcement about her health.
What did she say about breast-health awareness and prevention?
Jolie also used the interview to argue that women should be able to make informed choices about their healthcare. The report quotes her saying that genetic testing and screening should be accessible and affordable for women with clear risk factors or a significant family history. That is her advocacy position as reported in the interview, not individualized medical advice or a substitute for clinical guidance.

What is the context behind her mastectomy?
Jolie has said that she carries a BRCA1 mutation and underwent a preventive double mastectomy in 2013. In a May 2013 New York Times essay, she estimated that her own breast-cancer risk had fallen from 87 percent to under 5 percent after surgery, as recounted in the AOL/People report. Those figures describe Jolie’s personal estimate; they should not be treated as a general outcome for people with BRCA1 mutations or as a prediction of an individual reader’s risk.
Where did the scar photographs appear?
The AOL/People report says the photographs appeared in a TIME France interview and that the full interview was due to appear in the publication’s first issue, available December 18, 2025. The original interview was not available in the reporting consulted here, so further details about its contents are not established by that report.
