Who was Anne Whitfield?
Whitfield was an American actress born on August 27, 1938, in Oxford, Mississippi. She is best known for playing Susan Waverly, the granddaughter of Major General Thomas Waverly, in White Christmas (1954). The Television Academy’s biography lists her birth and passing dates and selected credits.

What was known about her death?
Whitfield died in a hospital in Yakima, Washington, after an unexpected incident during a neighborhood walk, according to The Independent’s report on March 1, 2024. The report does not establish a specific medical cause, so no more precise explanation is supported.
What else did she do during her career?
Whitfield worked in radio from childhood and appeared across television, film and stage. The Television Academy’s selected credits include Emergency!, Ironside, Gunsmoke, One Step Beyond, Perry Mason, Cookie’s Fortune, Tick, Tick, Tick and The Prodigal. Her work therefore extended well beyond the role that made her widely recognizable to film audiences.

How did she spend her later years?
Her family described Whitfield as an activist and community organizer. In a statement reproduced by Entertainment Tonight on February 29, 2024, her family said: “After ‘retiring’, Annie worked tirelessly as an activist and community organizer, working right up until the day she passed away.”
