Keanu Reeves’s parents were Patricia Taylor, an English costume designer and performer, and Samuel Nowlin Reeves Jr., an American geologist. Their family moved between countries during Reeves’s childhood; after his parents separated while he was young, Taylor raised him and his younger siblings in New York and later Toronto, according to accounts of his life.
Who were Keanu Reeves’s parents?
Patricia Taylor
Taylor is described as English or British in biographical accounts. The Hollywood Walk of Fame identifies her as Patricia Bond and lists her work as a costume designer and performer. Reeves recalled that she had a costume atelier where he helped on weekends, picking up pins and cleaning in exchange for allowance money. The Walk of Fame’s biography and Reeves’s 2021 interview with The Guardian provide those details.
Samuel Nowlin Reeves Jr.
Samuel Nowlin Reeves Jr. was Reeves’s father. The Walk of Fame biography identifies him as a geologist and describes his ancestry as English, Hawaiian, Chinese, and Portuguese. CBS News’s profile describes him as being of Hawaiian-Chinese descent. Those accounts differ in scope, so the shorter description should not be treated as a complete ancestry list. CBS News and the Walk of Fame biography give their respective descriptions.
Where did Reeves spend his early childhood?
In The Guardian’s 2021 interview, Reeves said his parents met on a beach in Beirut in the 1960s. The family moved to Australia after he was born in 1964. Following the separation, Taylor took Reeves and his younger siblings to New York, and the family eventually settled in Toronto. These moves describe the changing settings of Reeves’s childhood; the available accounts do not establish that any single move had a particular personal effect on him.

What is known about his relationship with his father?
Reeves has said that he did not have a substantive relationship with his biological father. That is the clearest source-backed description of their relationship; it does not establish the reasons for the distance or how Reeves felt about it. The Guardian interview is the source for his account.
When did his parents separate?
The sources do not agree on the timing. The Hollywood Walk of Fame biography says Reeves was three and gives a 1966 divorce date, while a 2024 EL PAÍS profile says he was seven. Because the published accounts conflict, it is safer to say that his parents separated when he was young rather than assign a precise age or year. The Walk of Fame biography and the 2024 EL PAÍS profile give the differing timelines.

How did his stepfather enter the story?
Reeves told The Guardian that his stepfather, filmmaker Paul Aaron, arranged for him to work as a production assistant on a film during a school summer holiday when he was about 15. Reeves recalled that Aaron had to decide what to do with him over the summer and made him a production assistant. This was an early introduction to film work, separate from what is known about his relationship with his biological father.
