Catherine, Princess of Wales, has spearheaded the annual Together at Christmas carol service at Westminster Abbey since 2021. It brings together Christmas music and readings with recognition of people and communities who have helped others. The latest confirmed service in the official record took place on 5 December 2025; details for a 2026 service have not been confirmed in the sources cited here.
What is the Together at Christmas carol service?
It is an annual service at Westminster Abbey that combines familiar Christmas carol-service elements with performances, readings and a public recognition of people who have gone above and beyond to help others. The Royal Family describes its purpose as bringing people together at Christmas and recognising service to others throughout the year. The Princess of Wales’s official profile says Catherine has spearheaded it since 2021.
The service is presented as welcoming people of all faiths and none. Its exact theme, programme and guest arrangements can change from year to year, so an earlier edition is not a guide to a later one.
Where is it held, and who is invited?
The annual service covered by the official accounts takes place at Westminster Abbey. It is not described simply as a public ticketed concert: the event also recognises individuals, families and communities whose work has supported others. The official materials do not establish a general public ticketing process or a fixed eligibility rule for guests.

The 2022 account says nominations came through Lieutenancies, community networks and charities associated with members of the Royal Family. That edition also welcomed people considered vulnerable or isolated. These are documented arrangements for 2022, not a promise that every year uses the same nomination process. The Royal Family’s 2022 account also notes that local community carol services were hosted around the UK by Lord Lieutenants with Royal Foundation support.
How the service has evolved: confirmed editions
2021: the inaugural service
The first service was held on 8 December 2021, supported by The Royal Foundation. It recognised people and organisations across the UK that had supported their communities during the COVID-19 pandemic, and offered a moment to reflect on hardship and acts of kindness. The official account described its approach as both traditional and modern, with an inclusive feel.
The programme included Westminster Abbey’s choir, performances by Leona Lewis and Ellie Goulding, and Lemn Sissay’s composition “To The Day.” Readings were given by the Duke of Cambridge, Kim Daybell and Kate Garraway. These details come from the Royal Family’s account of the inaugural service.
2022: a service dedicated to Queen Elizabeth II
The 2022 service was dedicated to Queen Elizabeth II and the values the Royal Family associated with her life, including duty, empathy, faith, service, kindness, compassion and support for others. The choir performed familiar carols; “O Come, All Ye Faithful” was selected through a public poll. Performers named in the official account included Craig David, Alexis Ffrench, Samantha Barks, Alfie Boe and Melanie C. Readings included contributions from the Prince of Wales, Dame Kristin Scott Thomas, Hugh Bonneville and Kadeena Cox.

The service was also broadcast as a Christmas Eve ITV1 special titled Royal Carols: Together At Christmas, narrated by Catherine Zeta-Jones, with an introduction from the Princess and additional films. This is a historical broadcast detail for 2022; it does not establish the broadcaster or availability of a later edition. The programme and guest arrangements are documented in the Royal Family’s 2022 report.
2025: latest confirmed service
The Royal Family’s Court Circular records that the Prince and Princess of Wales held a Christmas Carol Service at Westminster Abbey on 5 December 2025. The cited record confirms the event and date, but does not provide a full programme in the material referenced here. The Court Circular is the official record of royal engagements.

What is known about the 2026 service?
The official sources cited here do not confirm a 2026 date, theme, performers, guest arrangements or broadcast. That lack of confirmation is not evidence that the service will not take place. For any 2026 specifics, rely on a later official announcement rather than carrying details forward from 2021 or 2022.
