What their approach to sports and education shows
An Associated Press review of Katie’s memoir describes her parents as more concerned with her overall well-being than whether she won in London. Ledecky writes of their attitude: “For them, it was almost like, Olympics, Schlympics.” The line is her recollection in the book, as reported by AP; it is not a quotation from either parent. AP’s review discusses the passage.
In an ESPN profile from 2016, David connected the family’s emphasis on education with Katie’s decision not to turn professional: “The way our parents believe in education, it was a no-brainer Katie wasn’t going to turn professional.” His comment supports the specific point that education mattered in that decision; it does not establish that the family opposed professional swimming in general.
