Dua Lipa’s parents, Anesa and Dukagjin Lipa, are Kosovar Albanians who moved to London as refugees in 1992. Dua was born there in 1995. The family later returned to Pristina, and when Dua was 15, she moved back to London to pursue music. Their own paths—Anesa’s legal training and later work in tourism, and Dukagjin’s music and marketing careers—were shaped by migration and rebuilding their professional lives.
Who are Dua Lipa’s parents?
Anesa and Dukagjin Lipa are Dua’s mother and father. They are Kosovar Albanian; Anesa also has Bosnian family heritage. Their family story spans Kosovo and London, with migration, career changes and a return to Pristina forming the backdrop to Dua’s childhood.
In a 2025 British Vogue interview, Anesa described the family as having faced many challenges and said she taught her children that they could resolve difficulties together: “We went through many challenges in life,” and “We as a family can resolve it.”
Where are Anesa and Dukagjin Lipa from?
The couple left for London in 1992 as refugees as political conditions worsened in the former Yugoslavia, according to British Vogue and The Guardian. The reporting identifies their move as refugee migration; it does not establish a more specific legal status.

Dua was born in London in 1995. In 2008, the family returned to Pristina, Kosovo, after the country declared independence. The sources establish these major dates, but do not fully reconcile every household move in the years that followed. The clearest account is that Dua later returned to London on her own at 15 to pursue music.
Dua has described the decision to leave Kosovo as rooted in the realities of displacement. Speaking about refugee experience in a 2022 KPBS/NPR interview, she said: “people don’t really want to leave their country unless they really have to. It’s really out of necessity.”
What does Dua Lipa’s mother, Anesa, do?
Before leaving Kosovo, Anesa had trained as a lawyer. After arriving in England, she and Dukagjin initially worked as waiters while retraining; reporting describes Anesa’s later training as tourism or travel and tourism. These career details come from profiles and interviews rather than a full employment history.
In British Vogue’s 2025 profile, Anesa spoke about the challenges the family experienced and the importance of facing them together. Her account offers a personal view of the family’s resilience, rather than an independently verifiable description of private family life.

What does Dua Lipa’s father, Dukagjin, do?
Dukagjin is a musician and business professional. He studied dentistry and played as a teenager in ODA, a Kosovo rock band. After moving to London, he worked in bars and reconnected with Kosovo musicians, forming a London incarnation of ODA.
Music Business Worldwide reported in 2025 that the band’s self-produced album began with a 1,000-CD run and later sold around 20,000 copies worldwide. Those are figures reported by the outlet, not independently audited sales data.

Dukagjin later studied marketing, returned to Kosovo with his family, worked in a telecoms business and founded a marketing agency. A 2025 Music Business Worldwide interview also says he became Dua’s full-time manager after she left TaP Management in 2022. These business and management details are time-sensitive.
Dukagjin is the son of Seit Lipa, a historian who headed the Kosovo Institute of History. In a 2018 Guardian interview, Dua said her grandfather lost his position after refusing pressure to rewrite Kosovo history. That account is Dua’s family testimony, as reported in the interview.

How did Anesa and Dukagjin support Dua’s music career?
After the family returned to Pristina, Dua said she was excited by the move but had to adjust to schoolwork in Albanian, even though she spoke Albanian at home. At 15, she went back to London to pursue music after persuading her parents to let her go.
Anesa later recalled that allowing Dua to leave was extremely difficult. She described her own response as “the hardest thing I’ve had to do in my life,” while also saying Dua was determined and that the family believed in her. The account supports a story of parents who faced a difficult decision and backed their daughter’s resolve—not one in which they engineered her career.
How did the parents’ careers differ?
