Donny Osmond’s seven brothers are Virl, Tom, Alan, Wayne, Merrill, Jay, and Jimmy. Together with their sister Marie, they were part of a family of nine children. The count differs for Marie: she had eight brothers, because Donny is one of them.
How many brothers did Donny and Marie Osmond have?
The Osmond family had nine children: eight boys and one girl, Marie. Donny’s seven brothers were Virl, Tom, Alan, Wayne, Merrill, Jay, and Jimmy. Marie’s brothers were those seven plus Donny. Marie’s official biography describes her as the only girl among nine children, and KSL’s family documentary report lists all nine siblings.
Who are the seven brothers?
The brothers had different roles in the family’s musical story. The original Osmond Brothers quartet was Alan, Wayne, Merrill, and Jay. Virl and Tom were the two oldest brothers; Donny and Jimmy were among the younger performers in the family’s later music and television story.
- Virl and Tom: The oldest brothers. Marie later said both were born hearing impaired.
- Alan, Wayne, Merrill, and Jay: The original performing quartet, which began as a barbershop group in the 1950s.
- Donny and Jimmy: Younger brothers who became part of the family’s later television and music story. Donny emerged as a breakout star as the group’s popularity peaked in the early 1970s.
Why did the older brothers start singing?
In a 2019 message on her official site, Marie said the quartet began singing in part to help buy hearing aids for Virl and Tom. She credited her older brothers with paving the way for Donny, Marie, and Jimmy. As she put it, “They started singing to help buy Virl and Tom hearing aids.”

The message from Marie Osmond, dated October 20, 2019, offers her own account of how the family’s singing began. It also makes clear why the original quartet should not be confused with all seven of Donny’s brothers.
How did the Osmond Brothers become famous?
Alan, Wayne, Merrill, and Jay developed from a barbershop quartet into regulars on The Andy Williams Show. The Associated Press reports that the group recorded hits including “One Bad Apple,” “Yo-Yo,” and “Down By the Lazy River.” Alan helped write “One Bad Apple” and other songs for the group. The original quartet later returned as a country group in 1982.

The family’s success also extended to television. Donny and Marie fronted their own variety show, Donny & Marie, from 1976 to 1979. The older brothers contributed behind the scenes: Biography.com describes them overseeing musical numbers, and the Associated Press reports that Alan was a principal producer on the program. Their joint fame grew from a wider family enterprise, rather than from a separate duo unrelated to the brothers’ act.

It was Alan, Wayne, Merrill, and Jay—not all seven of Donny’s brothers. Virl and Tom were the older siblings whose hearing-aid needs Marie connected to the group’s early singing. Donny and Jimmy belonged to the younger generation of performers in the family’s later career. Keeping those roles distinct gives the clearest picture of how the siblings fit into the Osmonds’ story.
