Cooper Flagg’s parents are Kelly Flagg, née Bowman, and Ralph Flagg. Both played basketball in Maine: Kelly at the University of Maine after playing for Nokomis High School, and Ralph at Eastern Maine Community College after Nokomis. Their shared basketball roots carried into family life in Newport, where they raised Cooper and his brothers, Hunter and Ace.
Who are Kelly and Ralph Flagg?
Kelly and Ralph Flagg are the parents of basketball player Cooper Flagg. The family’s story is closely tied to Newport, Maine, and to Nokomis High School, where both parents played. Duke Athletics identifies Kelly’s college team as the University of Maine and Ralph’s as Eastern Maine Community College; the NBA’s prospect profile independently lists the same schools for his parents.
Duke Athletics’ “Flying Flagg” profile and the NBA’s 2025 draft prospect profile establish those college affiliations. The two paths were different: Kelly played for a university program, while Ralph played at a community college.
Where did Cooper Flagg’s parents play basketball?
Kelly Flagg played at the University of Maine
Kelly played college basketball for Maine, including the 1998–99 season. That team made program history by upsetting Stanford to win Maine’s first NCAA Tournament game. The Associated Press described the victory as a school milestone in its 2025 retrospective; ESPN’s feature, reprinted in Duke Athletics’ 2024–25 clips, likewise identifies it as the program’s only NCAA Tournament win.

How did Kelly and Ralph meet?
After college, Ralph played in a local men’s league at a community center alongside Kelly’s father. The ESPN feature says that was where he and Kelly met. Ralph recalled: “That was kind of where we met,” he said. “On a basketball court.”

Cooper recalled that during Maine winters, the family sometimes cleared a square in the snow and played in gloves. That detail captures the informal, everyday side of basketball in the household: games did not depend on a gym or a formal team setting.
These details come from an ESPN feature included in Duke Athletics’ 2024–25 clips file. The exact original publication date is not established in that reprinted extract, so it should not be treated as a newly reported account.

How did Cooper’s parents support him?
Associated Press coverage from April 2025 described Kelly and Ralph staying close to Cooper during his Duke season. Family time included workouts with his father and brothers. That account documents forms of support and shared activity; it does not establish that parental involvement alone explains Cooper’s achievements.
Kelly emphasized Cooper’s response to pressure, offering her view rather than an independently measurable assessment: “That’s a special ability to be able to drown out the noise when the noise can be overwhelming at times for somebody like him. I’m really proud of him for being able to do that.”

At the June 2025 NBA Draft, after Cooper was selected first by Dallas, Kelly reflected on the hope that he would share the family’s love of the game: “I just hoped that he loved the game as much as we always have, and we’re just thrilled that he did love it and he got to this moment. It’s incredible.” The remarks show how she described the family’s values and her pride at that moment; they are specific to the 2025 draft, not a statement of the family’s current circumstances.
