In Hulu’s official in-universe chronology, the series falls after Alien: Covenant and before Alien. That placement is clear; exactly how the show’s events connect to every earlier film—and what people on Earth know about the Nostromo—is less settled.
Where does Alien: Earth fit in the timeline?
The series takes place in 2120. Hulu’s official chronology lists Alien: Covenant in 2104, Alien: Earth in 2120, and Alien in 2122, putting the show between the prequel and the original film. Hulu’s Alien chronology and viewing guide gives the following broader sequence:
| Story | In-universe year |
|---|---|
| Prometheus | 2089 |
| Alien: Covenant | 2104 |
| Alien: Earth | 2120 |
| Alien | 2122 |
| Alien: Romulus | 2142 |
| Aliens | 2179 |
| Alien 3 | 2179 |
| Alien: Resurrection | 2379 |
These are story dates, not release years. Hulu places Alien 3 directly after Aliens, and Alien: Resurrection 200 years after Alien 3.
Why the placement does not answer every continuity question
The official year pair establishes the series’ position, but not every detail linking it to the films. In a July 2025 interview with SYFY WIRE, creator Noah Hawley described a “gray area” around what Earth knows about the Nostromo incident and how long deep-space crews can be out of contact. He also said he had not worked out every timeline detail.
Hawley’s interview included a remark that the show existed “a couple years before the events of the film, three years before.” That wording does not match the official dates: 2120 is two years before Alien’s 2122 placement. The official chronology is the clearer reference for the arithmetic; Hawley’s comments are useful for understanding that some connective details remain open.
Executive producer David W. Zucker framed the series as a fresh story that takes the original Alien as its departure point. In a TechRadar interview, he said Hawley had latitude because there was not much mythology to contend with. That supports a careful reading: the series does not set out to spell out every connection to the prequel films. It is not, by itself, proof that the show rejects the films or sits outside the franchise’s canon.

What makes 2120 significant for the story?
Alien: Earth moves the xenomorph threat onto Earth, rather than confining the story to a distant ship or colony. The official synopsis describes a planet shaped by five corporations—Prodigy, Weyland-Yutani, Lynch, Dynamic, and Threshold—and distinguishes among cyborgs, synthetics, and hybrids. The plot begins when the USCSS Maginot crashes on Earth, bringing a threat that Wendy and tactical soldiers must confront. The ABC series synopsis outlines those story elements; The Walt Disney Company’s series overview provides further production context.
That premise gives the 2120 setting a particular tension: the show places an alien threat on Earth shortly before the Nostromo story, while the extent of Earth’s knowledge of that later incident is not fully specified. The date fixes the series’ broad position without resolving how information, institutions, or events connect across the gap.

Should you watch in release order or timeline order?
Hulu recommends release order for newcomers, preserving the sequence in which audiences first encountered the films. For returning viewers, its chronological order offers a different perspective by following the in-universe dates. Adding the series to that chronological sequence places it between Covenant and Alien.
| Approach | Sequence or purpose |
|---|---|
| Release order | Alien, Aliens, Alien 3, Alien: Resurrection, Prometheus, Alien: Covenant, Alien: Romulus, then Alien: Earth. |
| Chronological order | Follows the in-universe dates, placing Alien: Earth after Alien: Covenant and before Alien. |
The choice is about viewing experience, not competing claims about the series’ date. Release order keeps the original reveals intact; chronology foregrounds how the franchise’s stories fit across time.
