Alien: Earth drew mostly positive early reviews for its eerie atmosphere, confident visual language and expansion of the franchise’s ideas—but critics did not agree on its pace or how much attention it gives the Xenomorph. The launch-period response suggests a deliberate slow burn that may appeal to viewers interested in corporate power, identity and new characters as much as monster horror.
What did critics think of Alien: Earth?
In a roundup published August 5, 2025, Rotten Tomatoes editor Christopher Campbell described the first reviews as “mostly positive.” The roundup’s overall picture was favorable but qualified: critics praised the atmosphere and the show’s ambition, while noting that it takes time to build momentum. These were reactions to episodes available before the series premiered, not a claim of unanimous or lasting critical consensus.
The disagreement is clear in two opinions collected by Rotten Tomatoes. Jamie Parker of CBR called it “the ultimate sci-fi series for fans of Alien.” Chris Evangelista of /Film, by contrast, objected that the show seemed “almost reluctant to give us much Xenomorph material,” choosing to focus on other subjects. Both are individual critics’ judgments, not statements from the production.
Why do reviews call it atmospheric and slow-burn?
Several critics responded to the series as a gradual build of dread rather than a succession of creature attacks. TechRadar’s August 5, 2025 review of the first six episodes praised the franchise atmosphere and deliberate tension, but also found that the story could drag around the midpoint. The distinction matters: the same measured rhythm that gives suspense room to gather may feel slow if a viewer expects frequent, sustained alien action.

TVLine critic Dave Nemetz, also writing after seeing the first six episodes, praised the visuals and Sydney Chandler’s performance. He described a show pairing alien attacks with questions about humanity. That emphasis helps explain why some reviews found the series compelling even when it was not centered on the Xenomorph.
How does Alien: Earth compare with the movies?
The series uses recognizable franchise imagery and horror atmosphere while shifting the focus toward a broader story. Rotten Tomatoes summarizes the premise as taking place in 2120, when five corporations govern Earth and Prodigy’s hybrid Wendy encounters life forms after a Weyland-Yutani ship crashes. TIME places the series two years before the events of Alien, which is set in 2122. That makes the show a prequel in the story timeline, though the reviews differ on whether its new mythology meaningfully extends what came before.

For some reviewers, the expansion beyond the familiar film framework is a strength: corporate power, technology, identity and humanity give the series other sources of tension. Others felt it revisited established franchise ideas or did not make enough of its signature monster. TechRadar’s praise for atmosphere alongside its criticism of pacing reflects a related trade-off: a slower, more expansive approach can build its own mood, but it may not deliver the concentrated suspense or creature focus viewers associate with the films.
Do the new characters and themes work?
Wendy gives the series a different kind of central figure, and the early reviews treated her as more than a route to the next monster encounter. Campbell’s roundup highlights her as a fresh character anchor, while Nemetz singled out Chandler’s performance. The show’s interest in identity and technology also gives the hybrid premise thematic weight, though the launch reviews do not establish that every critic found those ideas equally successful.

The wider focus is a genuine point of division rather than an incidental detail. Viewers who want the franchise to explore human and corporate systems alongside horror may welcome it. Those chiefly seeking sustained Xenomorph screen time may share Evangelista’s frustration.
What are the main criticisms in the first reviews?
- Uneven momentum: The broad early-review roundup said the series takes time to build momentum, and TechRadar found stretches around the midpoint slow.
- Familiar territory: Some criticism focused on repeated franchise themes or imagery rather than a sufficiently fresh development of them.
- Limited Xenomorph emphasis: At least one reviewer wanted more of the creature itself amid the new mythology and other storylines.
- Action editing: The Rotten Tomatoes roundup included a complaint about choppy action cuts. The critic speculated that unfinished visual effects in the review episodes might be related; that was speculation, not an established production explanation.
What do the current Rotten Tomatoes scores say?
On October 4, 2026, Rotten Tomatoes displayed a 94% Tomatometer from 121 critic reviews and a 65% Popcornmeter from more than 2,500 audience ratings. These are changing aggregator snapshots, not ratings issued by the show’s makers or a measure of every viewer’s response. The critic and audience figures reflect different groups and should not be treated as interchangeable.
