A February 2025 report captured Ali MacGraw at a New York City appearance, 55 years after Love Story was released. The report described her as 85 and praised her appearance; both details belong to that dated coverage, not to a current age assessment. The more enduring story is how an actor who did not expect a long film career found herself at the center of a phenomenon—and how she remembers its sudden impact.
What was reported about MacGraw’s 2025 appearance?
Yahoo Entertainment’s February 13, 2025 report described MacGraw at a New York City appearance in a black suit, with her gray hair swept back, a handbag and kitten heels. Its phrase “looks stunning” is a subjective description of that appearance, not a measurable claim. The article’s age reference, 85, was likewise tied to its 2025 publication date. Yahoo Entertainment’s appearance report is the source for that snapshot.

A later report by Infobae, published April 2, 2026, said MacGraw had turned 87. That is a secondary report; the available coverage does not establish an exact birth date from an official biography. Infobae’s April 2026 report supplies the later age context. Photographs and fashion descriptions do not establish anything about her health, routines or private life.
How did Love Story change her life?
MacGraw played Jenny Cavilleri, a working-class Radcliffe student, opposite Ryan O’Neal as Oliver Barrett IV, a wealthy Harvard student. In a 2021 CBS interview, she recalled reading Erich Segal’s screenplay and being surprised by how strongly it moved her. She said the film’s success changed her life “like a cyclone hit.” CBS News’s interview with MacGraw and O’Neal records their reflections on the film and its reception.

The success also collided with MacGraw’s expectations for her own career. In the same interview, she said, “I had no illusion that I had a long career ahead of me as a film actress.” Her perspective gives the story a different emphasis from a simple rise-to-fame account: Love Story became a landmark even though its star had not assumed that a lasting screen career was ahead of her.
Why did the novel appear before the film?
Love Story was written by Segal, who wrote the screenplay first. CBS reported that Paramount suggested he turn it into a novel to help promote the movie; the book appeared on Valentine’s Day 1970, before the film’s release. The movie adaptation and the book therefore developed as parts of a coordinated story, rather than the film simply adapting an already established bestseller. CBS’s account of the film’s history describes that sequence.

How big was Love Story’s success?
CBS’s March 2021 report offered several measures of the book’s reach. It said the novel spent nearly a year on The New York Times bestseller list and sold 21 million copies. The report also cited a 1971 Gallup Poll finding that one in five Americans had read it. These are figures reported by CBS, not independently verified here against the original sales records or poll; they describe the book’s historical impact, not current readership.

CBS reported in March 2021 that a newly restored Blu-ray release was available at that time. That dated report does not establish present-day stock, price, region compatibility or retailer availability. It also does not confirm whether a particular streaming service currently carries the film. Check a current retailer or streaming catalog for availability in your region before choosing a format.
