Alec John Such, Bon Jovi’s original bassist and a founding member, died on June 5, 2022, aged 70. The band remembered him not only as a musician but as someone integral to its formation: Such helped connect the people who would become Bon Jovi.
Who was Alec John Such?
Such was Bon Jovi’s bassist from 1983 to 1994, during the years the New Jersey band rose to international prominence. He contributed bass and backing vocals to the group’s first five albums. Songs from that era include “You Give Love a Bad Name,” “Wanted Dead or Alive” and “Bad Medicine”; available reporting does not establish Such’s performance credit on any particular track. Exclaim’s account describes his contributions across those albums.

How did Such help bring Bon Jovi together?
Such’s importance began before the band’s lineup was complete. He and drummer Tico Torres had been friends since childhood, and Such brought guitarist Richie Sambora to see Bon Jovi perform. Such and Sambora had also played together in a band called The Message. Bon Jovi credited Such with helping its members find one another.
He was already part of the local music scene: before joining Bon Jovi, Such managed the Hunka Bunka Ballroom in Sayreville, New Jersey, where he booked Jon Bon Jovi & the Wild Ones. In its memorial, the band said, “As a founding member of Bon Jovi, Alec was integral to the formation of the band.” Universal Music Japan posted the announcement on June 6, 2022, reproducing the overseas band account’s memorial statement in translation.

When did Such leave Bon Jovi?
Such left the band in 1994, and Hugh McDonald replaced him on bass. The reports cited here do not establish a reason for his departure. Such later reunited with his former bandmates at Bon Jovi’s 2018 Rock & Roll Hall of Fame induction. Reflecting on Jon Bon Jovi’s invitation and vision for the group, he said: “When Jon Bon Jovi called me up and asked me to be in his band many years ago, I soon realised how serious he was and he had a vision that he wanted to bring us to,” and added, “And I am only too happy to have been a part of that vision.” The Associated Press account was carried by The Guardian.
