It works best as a mood-setting ensemble chapter: the Road gives the group’s uneasy alliance a clear destination, while the trial begins testing whether the series can turn its supernatural premise into sustained suspense.
What happens in episode 3
Disney+ lists the episode as season one, episode three, “Through Many Miles / Of Tricks and Trials.” Its central turn is the coven’s arrival on the Witches’ Road and encounter with the first perilous trial. The Los Angeles Times likewise describes the group beginning its journey down the Road here.
That setup makes this less a self-contained mystery than a threshold episode: the coven has to move from forming a group to facing a shared danger. The Road’s ballad, which the Los Angeles Times describes as calling it “wild and wicked” and invoking travel “through many miles of tricks and trials,” gives the journey an appealingly folkloric frame.
Does the first trial work?
The episode’s strongest structural choice is to make the Road a test of the coven, not just a backdrop for it. A first trial gives the group a concrete problem and lets the series start converting its premise into action. The danger matters most when it exposes how much these witches still have to learn about trusting one another.

The suspense is more effective as an invitation than as a payoff. The Road promises strange rules and escalating peril, but the episode’s larger achievement is establishing that promise and getting the coven moving. Viewers looking for a neatly resolved adventure may find the installment more transitional than conclusive; viewers drawn to an unfolding supernatural journey have a reason to continue.
Ensemble, tone and momentum
The coven’s changing dynamics are the episode’s human counterweight to its supernatural setting. Kathryn Hahn anchors the group as Agatha, while the ensemble gives the newly assembled witches room to register as distinct presences rather than a single team. The cast also includes Joe Locke, Sasheer Zamata, Ali Ahn, Maria Dizzia, Paul Adelstein, Miles Gutierrez-Riley, Okwui Okpokwasili, Debra Jo Rupp, Patti LuPone and Aubrey Plaza, according to Marvel’s official cast listing.

The tone leans into witchy theatricality, with humor helping keep the danger from becoming relentlessly grim. That contrast suits a story built around a coven and a legendary road: the characters can be wary and amusing even as the situation grows more threatening. The balance is appealing, though the shift between banter and peril can make the suspense feel less sharp than the premise suggests.
How the episode serves the series
Showrunner Jac Schaeffer has described the series as a story of “a coven-less witch who is forced to form a coven,” as quoted in Disney’s making-of feature. Episode 3 is where that series-level idea starts to meet its practical test. The coven is no longer only an arrangement; the Road requires its members to share a journey and confront danger together.

The Road is a useful engine for future episodes because it supplies a destination, trials and an ongoing question about whether this particular group can make it through. This chapter does not settle that question, and it need not: its job is to establish the pattern and make the next challenge feel worth watching.

Yes, especially if you enjoy ensemble friction, stylized witchcraft and a story that builds its mythology over time. “Through Many Miles / Of Tricks and Trials” is a promising start to the coven’s Road journey rather than a fully self-contained showcase. Its atmosphere and group dynamics are more compelling than the trial’s immediate suspense, but the episode gives the season a clear direction and a reason to keep going.
